DLP2010EVM-LC: always white pattern been projected

Part Number: DLP2010EVM-LC

Hi

I am facing a weird problem with DLP2010EVM-LC kit. Initially it worked well today, then when I was taking next set of readings, somehow it always projects a complete white pattern, unable to project the usual splash screen images or test patterns using GUI or push buttons. Tried everything but couldn't resolve. Even updated the firmware but couldn't resolve the above issue. Commands do work but screen projected do not change. I guess the DMDs are always ON and are unable to change. Checked the cables and tried disconnecting and reconnecting the optical flex cable carefully. In IntelliBright page under Display tab and I can get different colors by disabling one or more LEDs. But the problem persists. Please suggest accordingly. Thank you

  • Shravani,

The first thing to check is definitely the DMD flex cable connection (between the optical engine and EVM). Are you seeing a solid white pattern that is perfect, or are you seeing image artifacts across the image? For instance, non-white pixels or vertical bars may be in indicator that the DMD data connection is faulty.

See if you can go to "Advanced Mode" in the GUI to read the system status registers in case you are able to read off any error bits. Failing that, let us know the register contents and we can follow up with some more specific debugging advice.

    Best Regards,
    Philippe Dollo
  • Philippe,

Its not a solid white pattern. Randomly few pixels are non-white. Please find attached screenshots of system status registers read from "Advanced Mode" GUI.

  • any suggestion on how to debug this?
  • Hello Shravani,

Thanks for sharing the status registers. All of them look as expected. Could you please upload a picture of the projected image you are seeing on the EVM?

Also, have there been any physical changes made to the EVM?

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hi,
I have attached image as well as video of the pattern that is been projected.
With naked eye, those moving color bars are not visible. Only through camera, we see those bars. To a naked eye,its a white pattern with few random black pixels.
Note: No hardware changes have been made. In general, only connections to use trigger-out are wired. But on the day this defect occurred, I haven't even wired those connections. I just ran a script that projects the most dense pattern in my set , so that accordingly I can set focus of the projector at a desired object distance. After that I ran my 40patterns-projection script. It did project all 40 actual patterns. I was setting up cameras i.e position, orientation and focus on object. After doing that, again when I ran 40patterns-projection script, it projected 40 times the same white pattern whose image I have attached in above reply.
    Hope this description helps.
    Thank You
  • Hello Shravani,

Thank you for uploading the image and video. It looks like the DMD interface connection may have been accidentally broken. Let's just try a few things again to confirm.

Please fully power off the EVM then remove the flex cable from the PCB and DMD. Then carefully but firmly reattach the cable. Then try to again reflash the firmware and display a simple splash screen. The firmware is at www.ti.com/.../DLP2010EVM-LC.

If that doesn't work we may have to initiate a return if the device is still under warranty.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hello Kyle,

I have tried again but of no use, the problem persists. In meanwhile, once I tried to use MSP430 sample code available on ti website. Using code composer studio and JTAG programmer, I loaded the code on kit. Then for a fraction of second it projected the default splash image. After turn off and on, it projected same white pattern again. I loaded the sample code again with a hope that it might project default splash screen but it didn't and never did. Sharing this, so that it might help you in understanding the problem. I am curious to understand what might have caused this problem.

Anyways if there is no solution further, please initiate return as the device is still under warranty. Let me know the procedure to do so.

    Thank You

  • Hello Shravani,

Sorry for the delay. I am checking with a coworker to see if he has any other ideas. If not you can initiate the return at support.ti.com.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hello Shravani,

I was just able to ask a coworker. Unfortunately we do not have any other suggestions if you have already confirmed proper connection and reflashed the firmware. Please contact support.ti.com about a replacement.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Thanks Kyle, for your support
