Lightcrafter Shutdown mode and boot issue

I recently received a Lightcrafter EVM and have been trying to get it to run. I obtained 5V 2400mA power brick for it but when I plug in to the power socket all that happens is a few LEDs turn on: D1 is solid red, D4 is solid green, D2 on the driver board is solid green, and D3 on the driver board flashes red. I have determined that it is going into the shutdown protection mode for the thermistor being above 70 but I don't understand why this is happening. Plus the booting screen has never projected even before the protection shutdown is initiated.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kevin,

The first thing I'm going to do is ask that you find a power supply that can give 3A output. I know the user's guide says 2-3A is acceptable but we've had better luck with 3A supplies.

Also, can you tell me what version your Lightcrafter is? There should be a 2.0 sticker on the board or the box if it's the newer version. If there is no sticker, then it's the older one.

Thanks for the quick response. The power supply was the issue. It is working perfectly now! Just in case you still wanted to know it is the older lightcrafter.

Glad that it's working now! Once you're up and running, make sure you take the time to update the FW on your Lightcrafter to the latest version as well. That will prevent some headaches in the future.

Hey Paul,

Are there protections on the lightcrafter that help prevent damage from high voltage? I am using an adjustable DC power supply and accidentally raised the voltage way higher than it should be. The lightcrafter's D3 LED now flashes for 1 second and then turns off for 10 seconds. Also if I plug it into the power the top board heats up very quickly. Is there anything I can do for this?

Kevin,

There are some protections coded into the MSP430 that sense overvoltage and prevent the Lightcrafter from booting up. There is also a temperature shutdown as well.

It looks like the shutdown mode you're seeing is due to the LED voltage being too high. After correcting your supply issue, does the LCr boot up? Or it is broken?

Since it is broken, is there anything I can do to fix it or would it be possible to send it in for repair?

Unfortunately there is no option to send it in for repair. Here's what I recommend you do - download the reference design schematic here: www.ti.com/.../dlp3000-c300ref

Use those schematics and the MSP430 code to help trace your issue. Because the top board gets hot, I wonder if there was a short created somewhere during the overvoltage event.

If you are able to narrow down the issue or you get some leads, please post back here with pictures and more information so that I can help you debug the issue and see what would need to be fixed.

Referencing the code might allow you to see what shutdown mode you're in and point you to a possible hardware failure. I'm not sure that you'll need to run the code.

According to the code I have hit the LED_FAULT_SHUTDOWN which occurs right after the board writes the i2c addresses. Not sure if you want pictures of the code or not but here is one. I'm not sure where exactly to look on the design schematic to find an issue. As far as I can tell it would be an issue with the FPGA since that controls the LEDs on the top board.

Are you able to determine specifically which component gets hot on the top board when you plug it in?

I'm wondering if the LED driver got damaged. Your guess about the FPGA is a good one as well.

Just to confirm the symptom, each time you plug in the LCr at the correct voltage, it does not boot. Instead it gets stuck in the LED_FAULT. Correct?

I cannot isolate it but I can tell you the area that the heat comes from. Here is a picture of the area. I have circled the four components that I think it might be but I don't have a temperature probe I can use to isolate the source. That is correct the LEDs on the top board do not even light up after it is plugged in.

I believe that the component that is heating up is the TPS650531 or IC power management.
I don't know if my other post posted but that is the correct symptom.

It would make sense to me that the TPS650531 would get warm, that's a power management device. Here's what I would try next.

See if you can reload the FW onto the device using an SD card. The directions are in the user's guide and I'm thinking that maybe the memory got corrupted during the over-voltage event.

If that's not it, then I would conclude that it's the LED driver, which you might be able to replace.

Thanks for all the help. My company decided to just order a new one and I now have the power supply TI recommends so I should not have this problem again. Thanks again for all the help!
