LightCrafter not booting up anymore (LEDs off)

Our LightCrafter got stuck during boot-phase once showing an image of itself in red colors. Problem sounds a bit like first one mentioned in document http://www.ti.com/lit/er/dlpt003/dlpt003.pdf

Since restart no light is emitted anymore, the system doesn't boot and no communication possible.

When switching on the power supply the driver module on the lower side has the green LED next to D3 permanently on, while on the processor boards LED D1 (next to the DM365) (red) and D5 (green) arepermanentely on as well. After around 10s the driver modules red LED (D3) starts flashing in a way indication a thermal shutdown (~1,5/1) and both LEDs on the processor board turn immediately off.

The effect stays the same when unmounting the processor board.

Power supply is a laboratory PS with 5V/5A supplying with about 0.5A during these 10s.

The boards probably have older firmware flashed. There is no "V2" sticker on board or package.

I tried to update the DM365 firmware with an 2GB SD card (no HC) and tried booting from it, which was both unsuccessful.

The LightCrafter is unmodified and was bought in October last year.

I think there is a defect. Anthing else I can do to prove/counter-prove?

  • Fabian,

Sorry that you're having trouble with your Lightcrafter EVM! If I may, I'd like to clarify a couple things:

    1. Your Lightcrafter get stuck every time you attempt to power up, correct?
    2. Has your Lightcrafter ever worked properly?
    3. Why did you unmount the processor board? Does that mean you took the top board off the evaluation module?

The way the LED behavior is described with the thermal shutdown, I'm wondering if there is an issue with a bad connection. Can you check to make sure that all flex cables are properly seated and that all other connectors are fully connected?

    Thanks!

  • Hello Paul,

the Lightcrafter gets stuck every time. I think that the processor board isn't even booting waiting for some acknowledge from the driver module first. Just a guess, as the LED near the processor stays red until shutdown after around 10s.

The Lightcrafter did work properly at the beginning, until what happened as described above.

I unmounted the processor board because I read in this forum that in that case a boot image is still displayed, ruling out the driver module from being the root cause.

    Kind regards

    Fabian

  • Hi Fabian,

Can you confirm that all connectors and flex cables have been properly seated and double checked? It seems that there is an issue with some fault condition being thrown, either temperature or voltage.

The device worked at some point and then failed in the manner described. Did anything change between?

Check to make sure that the power supply is properly connected and that the barrel connector for the power is firmly attached. I've found that on some units I have to spin the plug once it's in the Lightcrafter to get a good connection and adequate power.

  • Hello Paul,

I can confirm that the flex cables are properly seated on the driver module. Double checked that as well, no difference in its behaviour. Other than that its just connected though J11 with 5V/5A power, also double checked the cables. Nothing was changed in between.

    Kind regards,

    Fabian

  • Hi Fabian,

Can you try to get UART output from your unit? You'll need a cable with a 2.5mm stereo plug to connect to the Lightcrafter and either USB or DB9/RS232 to connect to your computer.

The settings for reading the boot-up logs are described here:

    1.3.1.1 Serial Communication

DLP LightCrafter’s UART port serves as a console output of the embedded Linux device. The DM365 sends error messages through the UART and accepts root-level commands. A 2.5-mm stereo plug to female DB9 connector is needed to connect the DLP LightCrafter’s UART port to a PC. For PCs with only USB ports, use a USB-to-serial RS232 adapter. To view UART console messages, configure a terminal emulator (like TeraTerm) with the following parameters:

    • Baud: 115200

    • Data bits: 8

    • Stop bits: 1

    • Parity: none

    • Flow control: none

If you can't get anything out of this to see if the DM365 is alive at all, then I'm afraid that there's not much else to do and the unit is likely dead. I would also try to reprogram the device using the SD card several more times, it took me a few tried to get it right when I did it here.

One more test you could run would be to have the device boot from the SD card and see if that works for you. If it does, then you know that the FW on the DM365 is corrupt. Follow the steps in section 2.13.2.4 in the User's guide: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/dlpu006e/dlpu006e.pdf

  • Hello Paul,

i've tried numerous times to flash or start from sd card. Even found an old non-HC 2GB one. It didn't worked. As I don't have a 2.5mm stereo plug I can unfortunately not further investigate this issue and need to send this device back to the supplier, which will contact you along with a link to this discussion.

However, i'd like to thank you very much for your support!

    Kind regards,
    Fabian
