DLPLIGHTCRAFTER: Point cloud problem

Part Number: DLPLIGHTCRAFTER

I got DLP Lightcrafter and DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK-2.0.

After careful calibration, I got point clouds. Sometime, the point cloud looked like the pictures.

What is the problem? What is wrong?

Thanks a lot.

  • Shaokang,

These point clouds look pretty good to me. I assume you are scanning a flat surface? The top image is just a rotation of the bottom point cloud, yes?

With our SDK and EVM the results aren't going to be perfect, they are just for evaluation purposes only. What type of results are you expecting?

  • Dear Paul,

I need the layer of point clouds like this:

I know I had to filter it with my programs. Sure, what I scanned is a good plan surface. I just want to know why it is like this, the point cloud piece by piece:

What should I do about that to make my point clouds better?

    Thanks and Regards.

    Ren Shaokang

  • Hi Ren,

The stripes that you see are areas where the calculated depth is the same. If you're using our TI design (Lightcrafter with recommended camera and optics) a better point cloud could be achieved through better calibration and making sure that all optical components are clean and focused properly.

The next step you could take for a better point cloud would be to implement a different algorithm or modify the algorithm we use for better results.

Finally, for the best possible point cloud, you'd want better projector optics and camera optics as well as working the previous two steps. Our TI design is intended to show that this works and is not necessarily intended to provide the highest quality or production level point cloud.

  • Hi Paul,
I know now. Thanks a lot for your reply.
