DLP6500FYE: Error: Invalid controller /DMD dlp light crafter 6500

Part Number: DLP6500FYE

Hi, after using the light crafter GUI to flash the EVM after some time the DMD stopped displaying my patterns and when it was rebooted it gave me the error "invalid controller/DMD" and I have not been able to get the EVM to respond. The flex cable seems to be fine with no damage, I've only used this EVM for a few hours total, it's basically brand new. Any help as to what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated, I've seen other people with the same issue and they we're told to use the JTAG programming method to restore the EVM is this my only option?

Thank you, Jacob Martin

  • Hello Jacob,

Welcome to the DLP section of the TI-E2E community.

Thank you for contacting us about this.

When you open the GUI does it show the board as connected (upper left corner - green "indicator")?  If so please try downloading the latest GUI and firmware at:

    DLPLCR6500EVM

You will want items 1 & 4.  Use the current GUI (if possible) to load the new firmware first, then install the newest GUI.  If you already have the newest GUI download item one and the firmware file should be at C:\Texas Instruments-DLP\DLPR900PROM-4.0.0\DLPR900PROM-6500-v4.0.0 (default) - it is the .img file.

Please let me know if it is not able to do so.

  • yes in the top left corner i get a green connected light, but when sometimes the firmware version and tag are all "x's" , but if I unplug and replug the board the correct information shows up. All the appropriate LED's are lighting up on the board as well.
  • Sorry, also forgot to mention that it was acting like it was programming 4.0.0 and sometimes would show the current firmware under the green connected light in the GUI as 4.0.0 but the DMD is still not responsive.
  • It seems like my other reply did not show up. Yes the green connected indicator shows up but under status every time it says contoller/DMD incompatible. I've also tried flashing the 4.0.0 serval times and it has no effect.
  • Jacob,

It is possible that the boot loader has become corrupted.  In that case it would require a JTAG programmer.

It is also possible that something else went wrong.

There is a recent thread from a customer where the DMD seemed not connect, similar to this, but they had a colleague with another board.  When they swapped in the DMD from the other board, his board worked, so it turned out to be the DMD.

  • Right now it seems like the DMD is not communicating with the controller board, if this is the case what could I do to troubleshoot this? I will be getting a JTAG programmer regardless and trying that but in the case that doesn't work I'd like to know my options.
  • Jacob,

If the refreshing the bootloader over JTAG does not work and you got the kit less than 30 days ago I would contact the distributor you got it from.  I don't think they can replace just the DMD.

Otherwise it would be possible to get another DMD (DLP6500) directly from ti.com or one of our distribution partners.
