DLPLCR6500EVM: unable to switch to pattern mode Error: Invalid controller /DMD

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

To whom it may concern,

I have a DLPLCR6500EVM. It have functioned normally until I connected it to my computer with HDMI cable in video mode and set IT6535 Receiver to HDMI. In the beginning, it worked normally(this means DMD shows screen of computer). Suddenly, it disappeared. Then there is no reaction and no screen image.

and I found there has a brand on the DMD

So I reboot the DLP, and it didn't show anything(TI logo default originally). I tried to use GUI to check the problem, when opening the GUI(version3.0.0), it shows

"Unable to switch to video mode"
"Error: Invalid controller/DMD"

and it switched mode automatically between Video and Pre-stored Pattern mode (non-stop switch)

below is the attempt I have tried:

  1. reset the board, it shows "unable to reset the board, Error: i"
  2. switch to Pattern On-the-Fly mode, it shows "unable to switch to pattern from Memory mode, Error: i"
  3. switch to Video pattern mode, it switches back to Pre-stored Pattern mode automatically.
  4. check leds. D5 off,  D6 Heartbeat LED blinking, D8 Power LED on, D9 PWRGOOD LED on

I found someone has error like me.

e2e.ti.com/.../2024440

so I upload the firmware V4.1.0

When upload successfully, the DLP6500 seems auto-reboot, then has the same problem

I bought the UM232H, try to recover corrupted bootloader and FW on the device

I take a look at section 3.10 of DLP® LightCrafter™ 6500 and 9000 Evaluation Module (EVM) User's Guide

and follow it

  1. install the jumper at J9
  2. connect JTAG signal at J10
  3. start flash programming software and select
    1. C:\Texas Instruments-DLP\DLPC900REF-SW-3.0.0\DLPC900REF-JTAG\BoardFile.brd
    2. C:\Texas Instruments-DLP\DLPC900REF-SW-3.0.0\DLPC900REF-JTAG\bootloader_6500.bin
  4. Press Detect chain, the red and green LEDs come on.
  5. press "erase flash" and select all sectors and press erase. After complete, press exit
  6. After complete . press "program flash".
  7. turn off the UM232H, remove JTAG and power down DLP6500
  8. power up DLP 6500
  9. open GUI, it seems clear (not at any mode, status all clear)
  10. choose firmware, browse firmware C:/Texas Instruments-DLP/DLPR900PROM-4.1.0/DLPR900PROM-6500-v4.1.0/DLPR900PROM-6500-V4.1.0.img
  11. press upload. Then it shows "Bootloader needs update. Existing on HW - v2.3.0.  New- 3.0.0. select yes to update booltloader", then select "yes"
  12. After complete upload, it reboot, but still have same problem I mentioned above

Is there any expert for this particular problem whom I should consult?

  • Tim,

I am very sorry, somehow your message got overlooked.

It appears that the bootloader appears to be updating, but continues to remain at version 2.3.0.  Your issue seems to be similar to the other thread you looked at, but since they never replied again, we suppose that reloading the firmware/bootloader solved the problem.

When did you purchase this kit?

    Fizix

  • Fizix,

    Thank you for your reply.

I had reloaded the firmware/bootloader several times. I'm pretty sure the firmware and bootloader is the latest version(just downloaded last week). But it does not seem to work for my situation.
I just bought the DLPLCR6500EVM this June.
  • Tim,

I am pretty sure for your region that you have passed the warranty period.  That is why I asked.

What I am concerned about is that the error you are getting seems to indicate that the version being returned by the HW shows v2.3.0 and not the the 3.0.0 that you loaded.

I need to research this a little more.  I should get back to you by early next week at the latest.

    Fizix

  • Tim,

I is it possible to roll back the GUI version and use your USB/JTAG setup to load the earlier version of the firmware and let me know if it will boot up and communicate that way?

    Fizix
  • Fizix,

I can't find earlier version of the fw on http://www.ti.com/tool/DLPR900
    Could you send me one?

    Tim
  • Hello Tim,

TI policy unfortunately does not allow posting a firmware file or sending it via e-mail.  It must be done through the TI website (such as the link for version 4.1 which is currently posted.

However,  If you have had previous version, they should be on your system. Do a search on your machine for folders named "DLPR900PROM-xx.xx.xx"  where "xx.xx.xx" is the version number (such as 4.1.0).  I would just search for "DLPR900PROM" and it should show any previous versions you already have on your machine.

    Fizix

  • Hi Fizix,

I just have only version 4.1.0 on my computer. So, Am I have another way to get the previous version of firmware file (like put it at the TI website)?

    Tim

  • Tim,

We have had reports on a few systems that reloading the firmware a second time corrects some of these types of issues.
