DLP4500: Using Poit Grey Chameleon3 with DLP4500

Part Number: DLP4500
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Hello all,

I am purchasing a DLP Lightcrafter 4500 to make a 3d scanner. I was wondering if I can use Pointgrey CM3-U3-13Y3M-CS camera instead of FL3-U3-13Y3M-C camera? it is cheaper and currently in stock!

Thanks for your reply,

  • Hi Hadi,

Welcome to the DLP Forums and thank you for your question!

We have not specifically tried that camera in this design. That being said, it appears that the specifications are quite similar and the connection method is the same, so odds are that it would work in this design.

You may have to make a couple software tweaks and you'll want to carefully pay attention to the trigger connections because they're different, but other than that, I don't see any glaring issues.

    Best,
    -Paul
  • Thanks for the response, Paul.

I performed camera and system calibration following the guidelines in 3D Machine Vision Reference Design program. When select "8" to perform scan by vertical and horizontal lines, I see only some vertical patterns on the screen (no horizontal) and the camera image files look like:

Here is system and camera calibration images:

I am using Poin Grey Chameleon CM3-U3-13Y3M-CS, connected pins 5 and 6 to pins 2 and 3 of J11 on board.

Any idea on why I don't see horizontal scans? Vertical scan also does not give me any points in the scanned data file. Please let me know if you need additional info.

    Thanks a lot!

    Hadi

  • Hi Hadi,

At first glance it appears that your triggering is incorrect because most of your images are black. I would consider using different pins on the camera you're using. On the Flea3, we use pins 3 and 5 which are detailed in the I/O connector diagram in this document: www.ptgrey.com/.../10206

Perhaps using Pins 8 and 7 would work better?

Did you make any configuration changes in the text files? camera_config.txt, etc?

    -Paul
  • Hi Paul,

I had made some changes in the configuration files that may have caused those black images. below is the screenshot of my current settings and camera images. I still don't see any horizontal scans and no points in the point cloud data. Also tried pins 8 and 7 instead of 5 and 6, did not work. Can you spot any problem in the configuration settings?

    Best,

    Thanks,

  • Hi Hadi,

When I look at your images, I am a little confused because I don't see the expected patterns. In general, the patterns should go from having a few binary lines (as in capture_31) to many (as in capture_30). Your images seem to be repeating patterns as well as not being in the correct order.

Are you using the latest version of the firmware for the DLPC350?

Can you show me what is in DLP_LightCrafter_4500_3D_Scan_Application_Config.txt?

    Paul

  • Paul, you were right! the problem was firmware. Don't know why, but it probably was uploaded with errors the first time. I uploaded the latest version and it works fine now.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hadi
  • Glad we could it get it working!

  • Hi hadi
    I also used Pointgrey CM3-U3-13Y3M-CS camera。What kind of connection do you use?pins 8 and 7 or 5 and 6?
  • Hi Deping, I used pins 5 and 6 for triggering.
