I know that the DLP4500 has two types of packages.
Why is the FQD package about twice as expensive as the FQE package?
Is there a difference other than the number of pins and thermal pad?

Hi H.U,
In general the two packages are quite different and as you mentioned one supports a thermal pad while the other does not. It will depend on your design and application as to which package will suit your needs.

Also, please take a look at the appropriate application notes for these packages and their assembly for further info. Note that the title of these documents are named by the legacy names (series 310, series 241) instead of the FQD and FQE package designators, respectively:
