DLPLCR4500EVM: USB connection issue

Part Number: DLPLCR4500EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Hi,

I have already tried to update and use the latest firmware 3.1.0 but the issue persists. Furthermore, after 3 weeks upgrading this new firmware, a new weird behaviour occurs where it is projecting red, green and blue light continuously even after my software is closed. I cannot risk to have an additional weird behaviour to happen in the site so I have no choice but to revert the firmware back to 2.0.0.

Recently, I found one condition that will trigger the projector turn into unknown device. It is when I plugged in the USB connection of second projector, the first projector suddenly turned into unknown device. I have to replug in the first projector USB connection for it to become USB Composite Device again.

I appreciate if you can provide some insights on this issue.

  • Hello,

The device drivers for the DLPLCR4500EVM probably don't allow for having more than one device connected at a time.

As for your projection pattern issue, what do you mean by "when the software is closed"?

  • Hi Philippe Dollo,

We have been using two projectors at one PC since we first bought this projector for this system. We only experience this problem in this one specific system. We have tried to change projector but the problem still persist. I understand that this might not be a problem from your side but any insight is appreciated before we changes the PC which will be a huge effort for us since the system is already on site.

The user only take video about the projector weird behaviour while showing that our software is closed. I not sure they normally closed our software or killed it through task manager.

  • Wai Kit Khoo,

I may need more information to understand your issue. Above, it sounds like you are saying you have been using both systems connected to a single PC, but only one of the systems is failing in this case. This would make sense as the PC software will select the first of the two USB devices to talk to, and ignore the other one.

You may be able to use both systems on a single PC by reworking the driver into two versions (one for each device), and similarly reworking the PC software to look for the new device ID in the new driver for the second system.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
    Philippe Dollo
  • Hi Philippe,

To make question simple, we would like to know what can cause the projector become unknown device when it is working fine for few days / weeks without new USB device being pluged into / out from the PC ? We are using windows 7 Pro SP 1 64 bits and Firmware version 3.1.0. That is the problem we want to solve now. Hope your side can provide some insights into this issue. Thanks a lot.

  • Please refer to the following question by my colleague.
  • Hi Wai Kit Khoo,
Do you know if the malfunction projector is able to project any image after you apply power? Just to make sure if it is only the USB connection not working or something else failed.
For debugging, just connect only the malfunction projector, and then few things you can look at if some part on the hardware is failed because of which the USB is not detecting, on the board there is (U27) TS3USB221ARSER part between USB mini connector and DLPC350, is if it is damaged, also look at (U26) SN74LVC1G125DBVR, these can prevent from PC host to enumerate and hence no communication.
    Regards,
    Sanjeev
  • Hi Sanjeev,
Even LightCrafter4500.exe is unable to connect to the projector when the Device Manager status is "Unknown Device" , so I am not sure it is able to project any image.
It is unlikely hardware issue because one of the ways that I can recover from the "Unknown Device" status is by
    1) Right-click uninstall the driver of the "Unknown Device".
    2) Click "Scan Hardware Changes" button on the Device Manager to trigger driver reinstall.
    3) After that, the status changed to "USB Composite Device" already.
FYI, we have also tried to change the whole projector before but the problem persists.
  • Hi Wait Kit Khoo,

Okay, after you perform step (3) above, when it changes to 'USB Composite Device" does it still work?

The LightCrafter 4500 USB detected as USB Compliant-mouse on the Device Manager, please check if it is detecting this way, otherwise you still have the problem.

    Regards,

    Sanjeev

  • Hi Sanjeev,

After I perform step (3), when it changes to "USB Composite Device", sometimes it works, sometimes I would still need to replug-in the USB connection for it to work.

So far from what I observed, The LightCrafter 4500 USB is always detected as "USB Composite Device" on the Device Manager when it is working fine.
  • Hi,
You may want to check if the connector is gone bad, like sometimes it makes connection and sometimes not, this can be one reason why it is not enumerating always. Try replacing the connector on the board and see if it helps. Probe USB_ENZ signal on the controller side, if it is toggling every time after power-cycle then it is problem with the physically connector or U27 or U26 ICs on the board.
    Regards,
    Sanjeev
  • Hi Sanjeev,

I have tried to change the whole projector once but the problem persists. I feels like it is not hardware issue but I will still try to check the USB_ENZ signal status after I prepared all the necessary tools.
Meanwhile, If we troubleshoot this issue from driver side, any possible scenario will cause the driver "corrupted" and subsequently caused the system to be unable to recognise the device and show it as "unknown device"?
I notice you mentioned the projector should be detected as "USB Compliant-mouse". Is there another driver that I am suppose to install for more stable USB connection?
  • Hi Wai Kit Khoo,
If you have another LightCrafter 4500 Kit you can try connecting, and see if you are getting the same result, in that case I agree that it is the PC driver side issue. Otherwise it has to be problem on the hardware that is resulting in PC to recognize incorrectly.
I am sure you have tried this on at least another PC and you see the same behavior.
    Regards,
    Sanjeev
  • Hi Sanjeev,

I have changed the LightCrafter 4500 Kit once before. The result is the same. So, I think it is PC driver side issue.
Do you have any insight on how to troubleshoot or fix the PC driver?
  • Hi,

How about you try with another PC with Windows 7 OS, see if it helps.

    Regards,
    Sanjeev

  • Hi,

We have more than 10 alike systems at different sites. Only this one particular systems has this problem.
  • Hi Wait Kit Khoo,
Please let us know if you need further assistance or have question. If not, I will tentatively close this thread.
  • Hi,

You may close this thread. It will takes some times to try out Sanjeev's suggestion.
  • Hi Wai Kit Khoo,
Please let us know if you still need help on this subject. I am tentatively closing this thread.
    regards,
