LightCrafter broken?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC300

Hi!

We removed the light engine and the DLP LightCrafter works before. But on 8/1, after we unplugged power and reconnected by GUI, the version on the left corner became: MSP430: 0.0. I try to upgrade MSP430 again. After that, when I connected it shown “commend failed” on the bottom, Version became DM365: 5.0, DPGA XXX.XXX, MSP430: XXX.XXX. When I upgraded the MSP430 and DLPC300, the GUI show me: “command FAILED”.  I can success by upgrading FPGA and EDID. When I use the Static image mode, it show “command SUCCESS”, but the DMD did not change at all when I upload a image. And I installed the Light engine, it cannot illuminate. I try to use SD card upgrade DM365, the LED D1 show red and then changed to green. I don’t whether it works, because the display was dark in the process. And nothing changed after I upgrade DM365. Now, how can fix the problem now?

   Thank you for a help.

  • Hello Ziyi,

Welcome to TI DLP E2E community!

I would encourage you to follow the following troubleshooting procedure:

    1. If it worked fine and you saw the splash images while booting up and then the RGB colored patterns before you removed the light engine and now it stopped working then the cause could be bad connection between driver and systems board or between the light engine and the driver board.
    2. Follow the instructions in the E2E thread :
    3. http://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp__mems_micro-electro-mechanical_systems/f/850/t/322842.aspx
    4. If it still does not give any light output, but you are able to connect to the GUI and the DM365 and MSP430 versions are xxx then, it could be because of corrupted DLPC300 firmware. Follow the steps as below to fix it:
    • During the process of updating the DM365 firmware, the DLPC300 or the controller firmware might have gotten corrupted. In that case you can connect and communicate to DLP LightCrafter, but there is no light output.
    •  In this case, please download the DLPR300PROM bundle from here: http://www.ti.com/tool/dlpr300
    • In the GUI, go to Upgrade/Splash tab, select DLPC300 from the Upgrade drop down, select the file downloaded from the previous step and click “Install”.
    • Make sure you hard reboot the system after this step (unplug the power and plug it back in)
    • If you are trying to upgrade the DM365 firmware after getting the light output, then follow the steps below:

    i.  Directly boot from the SD card in which case you build an SD card with lcr_dm365_v5_sd.dat and the switch remains on the side closer to SD card all the time.

ii. Boot from NAND in which case you build the SD card with lcr_dm365_v5_nand.dat and wait until the kernel gets copied into NAND. After the kernel gets copied into NAND, move the switch away from the SD card and remove the SD card.

      • Steps to follow to boot the DLP LightCrafter  from an SD card:

i  Format the SD Card (Transcend 4GB micro SD HC card is recommended).

ii.  Run this command on the Command prompt (opened with administrator permissions)

iii.  Navigate to the directory “SD Card Utility” inside the downloaded 3.0 Bundle that has .dat file

    iv.  Execute  the following command:

          • lcr_boot_sd.exe dm3xx_sd.dat  F:  (or whatever SD card drive is mounted)

    v.  Make sure it comes back and prompts that image is successfully copied.

vi. Remove the SD card and put it inside the SD card slot on DLP LightCrafter, flip the switch towards the SD card and power it up

vii.  You should see a series of images/ splash screens.

viii.  You should not need to flip the switch to the other side in this process.

ix.  Note that now onwards, you will always need the SD card inserted in the DLP LightCrafter and the switch always towards the SD card.

    x.  Eventually the LightCrafter should boot up completely and you should see the RGB bars and the LED D1 should be blinking Red and green continuously.

xi.  After this step, you should be able to connect to it from the GUI (download the latest form DLP LightCrafter 3.0 Software and Firmware Bundle).

xii.  Once you upgrade the DM365 firmware and are able to connect to the GUI, also upgrade the FPGA firmware to the lastest version.

Steps to follow to boot it up from NAND:

    i.  Format the SD card

              ii.  Execute the following command:

      • lcr_boot_sd.exe dm3xx_NAND.dat  F:  (or whatever SD card drive is mounted)

iii.  Now insert the SD card into the SD card slot, make sure the switch is towards the SD card

iv.  Power up the DLP LightCrafter

    v.  Watch series of the splash images and watch the LED D1.

vi.  As soon as the LED D1 turns green, then flip the switch away from SD card and power cycle the DLP LightCrafter.

vii.  Now what it means is, it has copied the firmware over to NAND flash part on the board. Now you can even remove the SD card and it should boot up from NAND.

viii.  Note that, now onwards the switch always needs to be in a position away from SD card.

Hopefully this helps you fix the issue with your lightcrafter.

    Manasi

  • Thank for your reply。

I have removed the light engine. I think it is OK to connect the DLP by GUI. But it has a problem as the figure.

But I can not upgrade the DLP300.

I think I use the correct its for DLP 300 as the figure.

    But it failed.

  • Hi Manasi,

The current problem is that I can  not upgrade DLPC300. So the state of DLP  can not be changed.  I have show the situation in picture. What can I do now?

         Ziyi

  • Hello Ziyi,

This usually is a problem of DLPC300 firmware being corrupted.

Could you try upgrading the FPGA and MSP430 firmwares first, hard reboot the system and then try upgrading the DLPC300 firmware?

    Regards

    Manasi

  • When I upgrade the FPGA and MSP430, the MSP430 show me 'commend fail', the FPGA shown me "commend success". The version in corner did not change. I will try to reboot after upgrade each firmwares.

       Ziyi

  • Hi Manasi,

It seems that I can upgrade the FPGA, but  I can not upgrade MSP430, shown on the picture.

It seems can not be upgraded.

Even after I unplug the usb and power of DLP, and plug them again, the situation did not change. Do we have any other way to instal the firmware?

  • Hello Ziyi,

Looks to me that somehow one of the firmwares is still corrupted. I would recommend starting fresh and do the following things in order:

    • Prepare an SD card with DM365 latest firmware to boot the LightCrafter from NAND. Follow steps in section 2.13.2 in the DLPLightCrafter Users guide.
    • Then connect to the GUI and try to do a get versions and it should show all three DM365, FPGA and MSP430 versions. That would ensure that the communications between the DM365 and FPGA, MSP430 is working.
    • If step 2 fails, then try upgrading the firmware in the following order:
      • MSP430 (select the .txt file)   (hard reboot, unplug the power and plug it back in after this step)
      • FPGA (.rbf file)
      • DLPC300 (.bin)

Let me know what you still have issues.

    Regards

  • Hi Manasi,

I have tried to upgrade DM365.v5.0  by SD card. After that I still can not upgrade the MSP430 and DLPC300. I don't know whether I upgrade DM365 successfully.  We have remove the light engine so that I can not see the upgrading image from DLP. I just can observed the light from red to green in the upgrading process as the figure. I feel it did n't success.

  • Hello Ziyi,

I see that in the second picture, the LED D1 turns Green. That means it has been successfully upgraded the DM365 firmware. In this case, were you able to connect to GUI and do a "Get Version".

What are the DM365, MSP430 and FPGA versions that you get?

Did you then try upgrading the DLPC300 firmware?

    Regards

    Manasi

  • Hi Manasi,

It can connect the GUI. The version of DM365 is 5.0. But the version of MSP430 and FPGA is shown xxx.xxx.  It seems that nothing change after I upgrade the DM365.

         Ziyi

  • Hello Ziyi,

From this information, I am pretty sure it is DLPC300 fimware corruption issue. Can you now try and upgrade the DLPC300 firmware, now that you can connect to GUI.

    Regards

    Manasi

  • Hi Manasi,

The big problem is that I can not upgrade DLPC300, it tell me failed when I upgrade DLPC300. I think if I can upgrade DLPC300 successfully, the problem will be fixed, but I can not , as the figure.

    The DLPC300:

    After processing, it shown

  • Hi TI Support,

I got the same problem, after upgrading DM365 5.0,  the FPGA and MSP430 firmware version become XXX.XXX. So, where is the link for FPGA, MSP430 and DPLC300 firmware ?

The other question is : Is it possible to make LED Driver turn on together, without switching between RED, GREEN and BLUE LED?

    Thanks You

  • HI,

The problem is that I can not upgrade DLPC300 by GUI. Do I have another way to upgrade it?

  • Hello Eko,

Is the D1 Status LED blinking when you boot the system? If it staying solid RED all the time, it is because DM365 is not booting properly.

The LightCrafter Kit LED driver circuit is not powerful enough to drive ALL three LEDs simultaneously. If you plan to drive all three you can have look at this one http://www.keynotephotonics.com/info-lc3000/

    Regards,

    Sanjeev

  • Hello Ziyi,

Is it the DLPC300 Firmware or any software on the LightaCrafter Kit?

    Regards,

  • Hello Sanjeev,

Yes, the D1 status LED is blinking(not staying solid RED all the time). So, what we should do again ? The other question are, why TI not download the latest firmware on DLP? Because, every we buy DLP LightCrafter kit, customers always requested to download the latest firmware. Can we request to get DLP Kit if we buy again ?

About the lightcrafter kit LED, if only use the little current, is it possible to drive ALL LED with simultaneously?

    Thanks

    Eko

  • Hello Eko,

Can we request to get DLP Kit if we buy again ?

[Sanjeev] We are aware of the situation and we are actively working with the Young Optics to ship the up to date firmware on the kits. So it will take a while when kits will be shipped with latest firmware on them.

About the lightcrafter kit LED, if only use the little current, is it possible to drive ALL LED with simultaneously?

[Sanjeev] There was similar discussion on this topic in the E2E forum, due to the way driver circuit is designed, the RED led on the kit draws more current than the others, this results in, it is not possible to drive all the LEDs simultaneously, Keynote Photonics Design House selling LC3000-PRO kit with more powerful LED driver, you can drive LEDs simultaneously.

Yes, the D1 status LED is blinking(not staying solid RED all the time). So, what we should do again ?

[Sanjeev] It is mostly likely problem with the top-board (system board) connection to the bottom board (driver board), the DM365 firmware is OK, the DM365 is not able to communicate with MSP430 and DLPC300 devices. Try disconnection and reassembling the board board.

    Regards,

    Sanjeev
