Structured light application

Hello,

We are exploring a structured light application and trying to determine the most appropriate TI products.  Our requirements are:

- ability to project high-resolution coloured line patterns, rate < 1 kHz

- ability to focus the light pattern at short range (20 cm - 80 cm)

- ideally, a camera interface included

The LightCrafter evaluation modules look attractive because they are more or less ready to use. Would any of these suit our requirements? Also, do any of the modules include both the light projection unit and a camera? If so, can the camera and its lens be swapped if necessary?

Thanks for any advice,

Andre

  • Hi Andre,

Welcome to the forums! Yes, the LightCrafter meets all of the requirements you listed. If you look at the user's guide and application notes on the LightCrafter page, you can find more information.

The camera is not included with the LightCrafter, however there is an interface to the platform itself as well as camera and projector triggering options. Take a look at our documentation and let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Thanks,

    Clinton

  • Hi Clinton,

Thanks very much for the reply. I've had a read through the user's guide, and it looks promising. A few questions I have are:

    - it seems the minimum focal distance is >350 mm. What would I need to do to reduce this to say 200 mm?

    - is it possible to swap in different micromirror arrays and controllers into the evaluation board, or are these fixed?

    - in terms of budgeting for a working system, what are the additional components I would need? It looks like a power supply and trigger connector (for the camera) at least. Is there anything else?

    Thanks,

    Andre

  • Hi Andre,

The focal distances are related to the light engine on the LightCrafter (also known as the LightCrafter3000) evaluation module (EVM). You would need to look into modifying or changing the optics on the EVM. It is not possible to swap different DMDs or controllers into the LightCrafter. We offer other EVMs which showcase our other chipsets (paired DMD + controller).

We currently have a structured light TI reference design released that uses our LightCrafter4500 EVM. You can find more information on this design here (http://www.ti.com/tool/tida-00254). We are working to release similar designs based on our LightCrafter3000 EVM as well as our LightCrafter6500 EVM.

The bill of materials for this design will give you a good idea of what's needed for a structured light application.

    Thanks,

    Clinton
