DLP LightCrafter Questions

A) can the system be powered using lithium ion battery rather than a wall charger? Can it be powered by the computer?

B) can the input be wirelessly streamed to the projector?
C) Does the projector already have a projection lens? If yes, could we have some information on the lens. If no, do they recommend any as starting option?
D) is the image bright enough to see on a white screen 1 to 1.5 foot away in room light?

  • Hi Dylan,

Many of your questions depend on the system design, but I will assume you are referring to the LightCrafter 4500 as it is. Please correct me if this assumption is incorrect.

    A) can the system be powered using lithium ion battery rather than a wall charger? Can it be powered by the computer?

    • For the LightCrafter 4500 to reach maximum light output it needs at least 5A at 12V to properly power its LED drivers. If you don't need the maximum output (~150 lumens) you could use a weaker power source. Computer USB ports can typically supply 500mA at maximum so they could not power the EVM. If you find a powerful enough lithium ion battery, it could power the device.
    B) can the input be wirelessly streamed to the projector?
    • Not as is. You would need to implement a systems board with wireless capabilities.
    C) Does the projector already have a projection lens? If yes, could we have some information on the lens. If no, do they recommend any as starting option?
    D) is the image bright enough to see on a white screen 1 to 1.5 foot away in room light?
    • Yes, I use it at my desk quite frequently :)

    Hope this helps!

  • Thank you your answer was very helpful and you assumption was correct.
For a wireless connection would I be able to use a BeagleBoard to relay an image to the LightCrafter

  • Hi Dylan,

Possibly, but I'm not very familiar with the BeagleBoard. You can definitely stream an image to the LightCrafter 4500 and control it from the BeagleBoard, but I wouldn't be able to help you with the BeagleBoard itself.

There are a lot of resources for the BeagleBoard on their website (http://beagleboard.org/) and they also have a forum where you could get help using the BeagleBoard.

    Best regards,

  • I just had one more question. What type of input can the demo device accept and display without significant amount of preprocessing? For example, can I project a slide from a PowerPoint presentation on my laptop directly.

  • Hi Dylan,

Yes you can. In the LightCrafter 4500 Control Software GUI you can set the device to "Video Mode" and plug your computer video output into the mini-HDMI connector of the EVM. Also, by default the device starts in video mode unless you've modified its default settings.

    Best regards,
