Hi,

I would like to use a laser instead of LEDs in the Light Crafter 4710 for illuminating the DMD but when I remove one LED or all of LEDs the system doesn't display an image.

How can I use a laser by removing the LEDs without provoke this issue ?

Hello User,

Thank you for your interest in our DLP Technology. For using only one LED a special firmware is needed otherwise the DLPA3005 is powering off to protect the device.

What wavelength is your laser using ? Please refer to the DMD datasheet for wavelength specifications.

Thank you for your reply. If I use this special firmware , could I replace the LED by a laser without powering off the DLPA3005 ?

I will use a UV laser at 350 nm.

Hello Kenny,

Yes you can do that as long as you meet the specs of the DLPA3005. What voltage and current do you need for the laser ?

Please note that we specify for wavelength below 400nm a max. power of 0.68mW/cm2.

Hello Nadine,

I made a mistake in my previous reply, I will not use a UV laser but 3 lasers with blue, red and green colors and an illumination wavelenght range in the visible.

Actually I can't give you the voltage and the current for lasers but I will provide you this information in a few days.

This special firmware can be found on TI website ?

Hello Kenny,

A change of firmware would be only needed if you would like to drive only one laser. Since you mentioned you are going to use 3 lasers for Red, Green and Blue no immediate firmware change is needed.

I would have to provide a special firmware in case you would like use only one laser. The DLPA3005 limitation for VLED is 6.3 V and the max. current is 16 A.

Hello Nadine,

I think that lasers are not connected to the EVM but are represented as external sources for illuminating the DMD. I will confirm you this during the week.

What are the minimal voltage and current for the DLPA3005 ?

Hello Kenny,

We don't specifically specify a min. value for VLED. The minimum current is specified to 1 A. The DLPA3005 is trying to achieve the desired current and adjust VLED accordingly.

Please also refer to the DLPA3005 datasheet.

I will use one laser on the EVM for some tests and after I will use 3 lasers on the EVM. Could you send me the special firmware please ?

Hello Kenny,

I can provide a firmware which has a the blue LED on 100% duty cycle which means only the blue LED is running.

You would have to connect your laser to the blue LED connection. The firmware doesn't enable the blue LED by default you would have to send an I2C command to enable the blue LED.

Hello,

I Got the firmware .. updated it... but all LEDs are off.. i am using TI's GUI v5.0 .... is there any special requirement... GUI detects EVM Perfectly...

but doesnt shows anything... can you please guide how to operate... does it require any special I2C commands...

Hello Himanshu,

As mentioned previously the LEDs are turned off by default. You would have to enable the blue LED and switch to the user defined look.

You can do that by using the GUI v5.0

I did that and it worked like charm... thank you very much... now one more quesiton.. i want to by pass on/off button it will be done using software .. i read on another post that i need to modify MSP430 Code.. if i will modify it than what should i do for 100%duty cycle??

Hello Himanshu,

You can send through the MSP430 I2C commands to enable the LEDs and switch to the user defined Look after Proj_ON went High and the DLPC3439 has been booted.

If you don't want to do that you can always enable the LEDs and select look via the EVM GUI.

I have a similar application, which requires me to use 4710 (EVM) to project two lasers into patterns. My two lasers are 690nm and 830nm, each of them is about 30-50mW.

I am wondering if you can recommend a document, or guideline on replacing the LEDs by the lasers. I am curious about the optics coupling structures of the 4710 EVM. If I have to use the single-LED firmware that you mentioned previously, I suppose I will have to use a dichroic to combine the two laser beams and multiplex them by time splits.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for my application. thank you in advance.

Unfortunately we don't have an optical reference design for laser applications.

Please also note our DMD Environmental specification for wavelength >700nm. This can be found in the DLP4710 datasheet.

Hi Nadine,

I would be interested in getting a copy for the 100% blue firmware for a similar application (I'd like to run the system with a monochrome LED at 15A and 5V (constant current configuration). Could you perhaps provide a bit of guidance on how to enable the blue LED via I2C along with setting the target amperage? I'm a novice on the scripting side of things and have only done some minor work via serial interfaces like Putty.

Also, if I wanted to drive the LEDs/optics of the system with an external power source (as Kenny was thinking at one point) is there a way to disable the need for the LEDs to be plugged in? Or is the easiest route to simply wire in dummy resistors to let the controller believe the LEDs are in and running fine?
