DLP4710: Optical Efficiency (TRP mirror layout)

Part Number: DLP4710

Hi,

I am comparing different DMD chips and I have trouble finding the optical efficiencies in the Datasheet. Optical Efficiency is defined in the DLP3000 datasheet by the product of Window Transmission, Diffraction Efficiency, Mirror Surface Reflectivity and Fill Factor. It is equal to 68% for the DLP3000 which has a Diamond mirror layout.

Is it the same for TRP mirror layout like the DLP4710?

I have read here:  that the new architecture is 30% more efficient. Is that the case?

Tchüss!

PS: I am also looking for the same information for the Manhattan architecture.

  • Hello!
Thanks for using the DLP E2E forums. That is an interesting question. Let me see if I can find some more information on this for you.

  • This optical efficiency is a very system level specification. Because of this we decided to not spec this value. Some major considerations for brightness in this case is the tilt angle and array size. As the tilt angle increases optical capacity will go up for a given array size. You can see that the DLP3000 has a tilt angle of 12 degrees while the DLP4710 has a tilt angle of 17 degrees.

    Hope that helps!

  • I understand it is a system level specification but I would still very much like to know the losses I get when I illuminate my DMD in a standard manner (i.e. with a 34° angle for the DLP4710) with no overfilling of the window.
Also, if I want to know the losses of my complete system, I will need the efficiency of all the different components. The DMD is one of them.
I thought the definition given in the DLP3000 was very useful, maybe the mirror surface reflectivity has improved since that device came out or maybe the fill factor.

    Thanks in advance

PS: I am not sure what you mean by "optical capacity"
  • Hello,

By optical capacity (etendue) I mean the amount of light you will be able to capture will be greater due to the increased difference in tilt angle. I believe that article is referring to the optical engine being more efficient by increasing the brightness per DMD array size. This is enabled by the increased tilt angle.
The window transmissivity, the mirror reflectivity, and the fill factor are essentially the same so the overall.

I hope that clears it up.
