DLPC3430: question about DMD masking

Part Number: DLPC3430

we don't need to use the full resolution of our DMD (only about half of the vertical resolution is used), I was wondering if there are any ways to alter the effective FOV of the projector.

For example, if we are only using the center portion of the DMD, I would like to eliminate the top portion that is not being used. That way we wouldn't need to add a physical object to absorb the unwanted light. I've attached an illustration - Ideally the blue area would be masked off.

One potential solution I can think of is masking off parts of the DMD with an absorptive black material. Otherwise, we could also try to alter the optical design to change the aspect ratio, that would also preserve all the output as opposed to throwing out unusable light.

Do you have any other suggestions? or experience doing this?

  • Hello User,

There is the possibility of achieve that by decreasing the image resolution and set the DMD display size to a smaller resolution. This would center the image in the middle of the screen and it could be also be moved in all direction.

    Have you tried that ?

    Thanks,

    Nadine
  • Hi Nadine,

Do you mean just displaying a smaller resolution image and padding the rest of the image with black pixels? Like the image below?

We have been doing something like this. But the problem is the black frame is still stray light that could reach the user's eye, and also reduce the contrast of the imagery. That's why it would be better if we could completely eliminate the unused regions.

  • Hello User,

I think if there is a solution this would be an optical solution then.

Are you building your own optics or are you working with an optical engine manufacture ?

    Thanks,

    Nadine
