NOR Flash for new design?

We are designing a C5515 project using the ezdsp5515 as a reference design. The ezdspC5515 uses a Spansion NOR Flash S29AL032D70TFI04. However, according the Mouser this device is schedule for End of Life.

Can anyone recommend a known-C5515 bootloader-compatible parallel NOR Flash device that operates successfully with the C5515 bootloader? I need ~1MB size.

I am considering:

Microchip/SST - SST39LF801C (advertised as being faster)

Micron/Numonyx - M29W800

Experiences and suggestions welcome.

Hi MikeH,

C5515 bootloader is not an issue. As long as the NOR flash is compatible with C5515 EMIF controller (I think most NOR flashes are), the bootloader can handle it. In the worst case when it cannot work after reset, you can override the DSP register values when preparing the boot image.

We have recently identified the newer Intel P30 NOR device handles the "Reset" command differently than their older version and hang the boot. We are in the process updating the documents to alert customers. You need to choose a NOR device that can support the "Reset" command.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you verify that the devices that I mentioned above are compatible? I am not familiar with the vagueries of NOR devices.

The NOR device needs to be CFI-compliant and supports the "Reset" command. These are the devices we have tested:

• Spansion S29GL016A
• Spansion S29AL016M
• MXIC MX29LV160T
• Spansion S29GL032A
• SST SST39LF/VF200A
• SST SST39LF/VF400A
• SST SST39LF/VF800A

Micron/Numonyx - M29W800 is marked as " NOT FOR NEW DESIGN".

Microchip/SST - SST39LF801C looks well from data sheet but remains to be tested for sure.

Does work.
