TMS320C5515 EVM Getting Started

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C5515

Hi,

I have been trying to get started with TMS320C5515 EVM (Rev B). I got a DVD with it which contained CCS 4.1 and drivers. I followed the Quick Start Installation Guide and installed the contents of the DVD (on a Windows XP - SP3 machine) . When I plugged in the EVM into the USB port, new hardware was detected and some drivers were automatically installed. In the Device Manager I see "Texas Instruments Emulators"->"Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator". However there is a warning sign on it. When I click on it, I see "Device Cannot Start (Code 10)". Troubleshoot does not solve the problem. Updating the driver does not work either as it says that the wizard cannot find a better match than what is already installed. I tried a fresh install of CCS a couple of times, resetting the board, power cycling, etc and none of these solved my problem. Now I no longer see the "found new hardware" balloon every time I unplug and plug in the hardware (even after a fresh install of CCS). As per the recommendations in another forum for a similar problem but with a different processor, I tried to update the driver by pointing it to ccsv4/common/uscif/ftdi/DPInst32. The install completes successfully with the following status: "FTDI CDM Driver Package - Ready to Use". This however does not solve the problem

Though I was sure it would not work, I tried CCS Configuration. I selected "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator"->"EVM5515". Then I clicked "Launch Selected Configuration" and get the error message "Error Initializing Emulator".

A colleague of mine with his own set of the same hardware encountered the same issue independently.

I think I may not have installed the correct drivers, but I do not know where to find them as I have installed the contents of the DVD using the auto-run application. I will appreciate any suggestions that will help me solve this issue.

Thanks!

Nandan

  • Thanks for the detailed posting. I had the same problem as described above.

Additionally, I was following the TMS320C5515 Evaluation Module (EVM) Quick Start Installation Guide instructions and have the following problems:

    • Install EVM Content from the CD-ROM
      • Step 5 says, " ... the user may be prompted to create a user license to activate the CCS software ..." I did not get this prompt. I called the Technical Support (800) 477-8924. She said that I don't need to create a license.
    • CCS Configuration Instructions
      • Same problems as described above by Nandan.

I am new with this. I would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • My problem has been solved by Spectrum Digital's support team. The mistake I made was connecting to J11 instead of J2. These are the troubleshooting steps sent to me by them. Hope it helps others who may encounter a similar situation:

    Thanks,

    Nandan

    Spectrum Digital's solution:

If you are not using a Texas Instruments XDS560 emulator, then you can ignore that entry in the device manager.  The XDS560 entry is not related to the C5515 EVM embedded emulation connection.

The Embedded emulation on the C5515 EVM board does not use any FTDI drivers either.  The step you took to install the FTDI drivers is not related to the EVM board's embedded emulation.

    -Open the windows device manager

-Connect the USB cable from your computer to the EVM board at connector J2 (on the EVM).  Power the EVM board.

-Initially the Windows Hardware Wizard should appear to complete the installation, however if you have done this before, it may not appear.

-Look at the Device Manager for an entry named 'SD USB Based Debug Tools'.  Do you see this?  If you do, and it is installed without errors, then proceed with the steps in the EVM Quick Start Guide to configure CCS and connect.  If not, look for another entry that may have a yellow "?" that appears when the EVM board is connected and powered.  This may be in the main root, or under the USB devices folder.

-Once you have located this, uninstall the hardware from the device manager.

-unplug the EVM and power it down.

-Plug the EVM to the USB of the computer again and power the board.  The Wizard should appear to help you complete installation.  If it asks for a driver location, direct it to “Program Files\SpectrumDigital\Emulation\Drivers”.

-Once the Hardware is recognized successfully in the device manager, then proceed with the steps in the EVM Quick Start Guide to configure CCS and connect.

  • Thanks Nandan. It solves my problem too.

    Useful resources:

    Thanks again.

  • I had similar problems.  I got as far as Windows recognizing the embedded emulator
when I plugged in the USB cable to J2.  CCS4 sort of recognized it, but I could never get
past the "Launch Selected Configuration" step as I always got the error.  After quite a bit
of trial & hand wringing, the solution to my problem was to turn on the POWER switch (J5)
on the EVM5515 board which is situated next to the wall-wart power connector.
Reviewing the "Quick-Start Guide" this step was not at all apparent.

    sigh...

  • Thanks Nandan.

I was held up with a problem, which i could solve with your suggestion.

  • Hi,

I recently purchased TMS320C5515 DSP Evaluation Module and went through the guidelines to communicate with the board. I have installed the CCS software that came with the DVD and then connected the board through the USB port. However, the board is not recognized by the computer. The board power is ON and I have tried it on different machines. Is there any additional troubleshooting step that might fix the problem? Or should I simply return the board and request a new one.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Hi,

Connect the USB cable to J2 (embedded USB emulation port), not J11 for debug mode of operation.
