EVMK2H: High-speed serial connection to Xilinx FPGA evaluation board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDXEVMPCI

I'd like to bring up a topic from last year which couldn't be solved then:

I would like to exchange high-speed serial data data between the EVMK2H and a Xilinx Series 7 evaluation board (e.g.  VC707 or KC705), preferably via the 4 Serial Rapid IO lanes located  on the AMC B+ connector.

For last-generation EVM boards there is a AMC-to-PCIe adapter board (TMDXEVMPCI) available which unfortunately doesn't fit to the EVMK2H board. The best solution would be some kind of adapter AMC <--> FMC to directly connect the DSP and the FPGA evaluation boards with each other.

I wonder how other people manage to exchange data with this EVM without buying additional carrier boards and a backplane or rack?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

  • Hi Chris,

The EVMK2H board does not support FMC.

We have an expansion connector but it doesn't follow any standard. If you want to use some of the connections routed to the expansion connector you would have to build an adapter board or an adapter cable.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Ganapathi,

Thank you very much for your reply. I guess you are referring to TI's AMC to PCIe Adapter Card (TMDXEVMPCI).

I agree that it probably would take a saw to fit this module to the EVMK2H.  ;-)

Another option we are looking into right now is to buy a Kintex board with AMC connector (e.g. http://www.vadatech.com/media/AMC517_AMC517%20Datasheet.pdf) and to use TI's Dual EVM Breakout Card (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/images/0/00/DualEVM_BOC_quick_setup_guide_09SEPT13.pdf). Unfortunately, the card is officially only specified for TMDXEVM66xx boards; for other cards one shpould ask in this forum.

    So here are my questions:

    * Would this breakout card also fit to the EVMK2H?

    * Is it possible to connect other third-party AMC-compliant boards? Is there any schematic available online to check the wiring?

    Best regards

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

There is a AMC break-out card for KeyStone II EVMs in design at Mistral. I don't think it's been released at this point but you can contact them to find out when it will be available.

    Regards, Bill

  • Thank you very much for the information!
