66AK2E DDR3 issue

We have a custom board using the 66AK2E and are having trouble getting DDR3 to run properly at higher speeds.  The board will sometimes hang when starting UBoot, usually at the point where it is transferring execution from Flash to DDR3.  Other times the board will boot, but we are unable to transfer large files over Ethernet.  Slowing the transfer rate down to 800MT helps this problem.  However, we have experience problems at cold, likely due to the condition listed in the Errata.  I have filled out the debug spreadsheet and tried to include it in this post.  I am not sure that it was inserted properly.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Patrick,

I've forwarded this to the DDR3 experts. Their feedback should be posted here.

  • Hi Pat,

Have you run an exhaustive memory test to try and isolate the type of memory problem that is occurring?  The goal is to try and isolate what type of errors have been detected and narrow the scope of the investigation. In almost all cases, the problem you have described is found to be an issue with the layout of the interface and is often associated with cross talk. A memory test which transfers blocks of data to a large portion of the memory using DMA can help isolate whether the error is occurring during reads or writes and whether the problem is isolated to a portion of the data bus. That is the first step in isolating the issue.

  • Hi Bill,

We have run the simple memory test and have not seen any issues.  We are in the process of putting the more exhaustive memory test online, including using the DMA engine to transfer the data.  I will post the results online once I have them.

I had some questions with regards to the DDR3 Controller register settings that I included in the attached spreadsheet.  There are discrepancies between some of the TI documents. If you could comment on those and also make sure the programmed values look reasonable, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Pat
