66AK2H14: Request to suggest suitable Ethernet switch

Hi,

I am using three 66AK2H14 devices in a single PCB. For SGMII interface, since there is space constraint to place connectors, I am planning to use a switch, for which one SGMII from each SOC are the inputs. Single output ( MDI, copper) will be connected to RJ-45 connector. This output must be from any one of the three SGMII inputs. Please refer image below for more information.

I request you to suggest on how to implement this, since i was not able to find any suitable switch.

Madhu,

We cannot recommend an Ethernet Switch for this purpose. There are several good Ethernet chip vendors that have Ethernet switches available for this purpose.

Madhu,

Note that 66AK2H14 contains an internal Ethernet switch that allows these devices to be chained.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the information.

1) Could you please share any document/ any evb which describes more information on chaining devices using internal ethernet switch ?

2) Also, Due to the presence of internal switch, Whether only one (out of four) SGMII can be accessed at a time?

Please see section 11.17 of the Data Manual for an overview of the Network coprocessor which contains the 5-port Ethernet switch which is connected to the 4 SGMII Ethernet MAC ports. More detail is available in the Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Switch Subsystem (1 GB) User's Guide at http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/SPRUGV9 The EVM as shown at http://www.ti.com/tool/evmk2h contains 2 Ethernet connectors and PHYs connected to two of these SGMII ports.

Hi Tom,

As per the Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Switch Subsystem (1 GB) User's Guide, out of the 5 ports of the switch, only one is connected to NETCP.

So, Whether all the four SGMII can be accessed at a time?

That is not correct. The Data Manual and the User Guide both clearly state that all 4 SGMII MACs are connected to the switch. Please refer to Figure 1-2 of the UG. If it says only one elsewhere, that is an error. Can you tell me where that is stated?

Hi Tom,

I agree to what you have mentioned: all 4 SGMII MACs are connected to the switch.

But the switch is connected to NETCP using only one port. So my doubt is whether that single port is capable of handling data from all 4 SGMII ports at a time. In other words, whether NETCP can access all the four SGMII ports at a time ?

Madhu,

The Ethernet switch can move packets between ports at full wire rate of all attached SGMII ports. It is an Ethernet switch!

That is different from discussing the amount of sustained bandwidth that the K2H device consume. This is highly dependent on the packet contents and the processing required. This is no different than if you had the K2H devices all attached to an external switch from another vendor.
