DM3x processor for wearable camera?

Hi!

I was recommended by an expert to move my question from the DM64x to this forum.

I am no expert in processor technology, and just starting to get a bit more familiar with the available technologies. We are looking into a project which would involve the creation of a wearable camera. Our technical members will look further into the actual design, but I would like to get a better feeling of the direction we would have to take (technically).

As such, could you comment on the technical requirements for a wearable camera, and potentially comment on the viability of Texas Instruments Video processors for such application?

The specs for our camera would be:

  • (Full) HD video
  • +5MP picture
  • WIFI connectivity
  • Flash memory connectivity
  • 1-2GB RAM
  • Battery = ~750mAh
  • Audio input capability
  • Max footprint: 40x40x5mm (LxBxH)

There are a few SoC available which would include the above (except battery). The solutions of TI would require the development of a SoC or SoM to include all the above.

Would this be a feasible project using Texas Instrument technology, provided that we get experts in the field to assist us? Are the power requirements of the DaVinci processors sufficiently low to allow for a wearable solution given the battery constraints provided above? Are there maybe System on Modules available already that include the DaVinci processor and are they sufficiently small?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

  • When I was in college, I saw this paper talking about something similar to your requriement.

DM365 can be replaced by DM368 as you require HD video
  • Thanks for the tip!

It's good to see that the tech seems already quite some time available (the paper is from 2011). That's encouraging :-) I understand from the paper though that they had to develop the PCB themselves to integrate the memory, DSP, camera etc on one. I think that they also connected the device through USB to a PC to transfer data and charge it. Do you have any idea about the typical power usage of such DM368 processor?

    Thanks again!
