TMS320DM365: USB host implementation issue

Dear Champs,

My customer wants to use USB port as HOST mode only, and they pull-down USB_ID pin(M1) with 1.5K ohm resistor as mentioned in datasheet.

But, they found their board recognized as device mode at sometime although they pull-down USB_ID pin(M1).

Can you guess why this device mode detection was occurred at sometime?

Do you think this can be caused by their charge pump design on VBUS?

I found charge pump should be used to supply 5V on VBUS on below e2e.

Is there anything else they should do to make sure USB HOST mode on DM365?

Hi Sung,

Two things need to be made sure are fine for Host mode:

1. The board is supplying 5V Vbus

2. ID pin is taken care (either through proper micro Type A side connected) or pull down as mentioned.

How do they say the USB Controller is still in device mode ?

Yes. I checked all these with them already and they confirmed there is no issue in 5V VBUS and ID pin is pull down with 1.5k ohm.

When issue occurred, they found the value of Devctl status register will be '0x98'.

1) Kernel : 2.6.18_DMVA

2) DVSDK 2.10.01.18

I attached their log in below, and they found something wrong from 266th line and found 'devctl 98' as below.

Is there any other method to force to be USB device mode?

Hi Sung,

It looks like Host Negotiation Protocol(HNP) is happening. What is the USB device being connected ? Looks like a Broadcom WiFi Dongle and is strangely looks it is going for a HNP, for what reason is not clear.

Meaning, according to OTG protocol, the roles of Host and Device can be reversed, with this Host Negotiation Protocol(HNP). I would suggest them to disable the OTG part(CONFIG_USB_OTG) in kernel configuration and only have USB HOST part.
