DM8148/8168 HDMI output can't work with Video Capture Cards

We have customers complain that our cameras (using DM8148 and DM8168) can't work with Video Capture Cards and Video Splitters.

We suspect that this is duo to the fact that Video Capture Cards / Splitters are not HDCP compliant. Although we do not need HDCP in our products, we do not know how to explicitly turn off HDCP features in the above two chips.

Would appreciate it very much if you could shed some light how we can do so.

Best regards,

Edward

  • Hi Edward,

DM814x is not capable of taking the HDMI or any other type of encoded signal directly to VIP. If you want to take the input from camera you have to connect the HDMI decoder in front of the VIP port which will convert the HDMI encoded signals either to BT1120 or BT656, BT601 or BT709 standards. We are using SIL9135 for same on our Video Conferencing daughter card to take the input form HDMI camera. But SIL9135 does not support HDCP.

  • Sorry I did not make myself clear, and many thanks for your quick reply.

I am talking about the HDMI output from 8148/8168 can work with most of the monitors/TV set, but they do not work with Video Capture Cards such as Black magic or Euresys Picolo HD one, and many other Video Splitters.

I wonder if this has anything to do with HDCP and if so, how we can explicitly turn on it so Video capture card can take in  8148/8168 HDMI output.

    Best regards,

    Edward

  • Edward,

I can provide you the below pointer:

  • Hi Pavel,

Thank you again for your quick reply.

We have made two models of camera, one uses DM8148 and the other uses DM8168. Their HDMI output are perfectly ok with monitors and TV sets.

Our customer wants to capture the video from these cameras via the HDMI output of these cameras. These are home video that does not encounter any copy protection issues as in your answer. But they can't do so via a video capture card or video splitters.

As the specs says, DM8148/8168 supports HDCP but we want to disable this feature - can you share some lights on this ?

To summarise, we want to use DM8148/8168 to output video that is HDCP free.

    Regards,

    Edward

What is the SDK that you are using?

In DM814x/DM816x EZSDK 5.05.02.00 / PSP 04.04.00.01, the HDMI HDCP is not supported by default. For adding HDCP support you should apply the below patches:

    http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-omap3.git&a=search&h=refs%2Fheads%2Fti81xx-master&st=commit&s=hdcp

The below patch enables the HDCP in DM816x PSP:

    http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-omap3.git;a=commit;h=c22e2dbc08f295aa806b0d53d5d4e9d034c315e1

If you have this HDCP support in your specific linux kernel, you can remove it like below patch:

    http://arago-project.org/git/projects/?p=linux-omap3.git;a=commit;h=58a323c792b04ba88c87ffaf8ab6baadf047447d

  • Make sure you are using the latest drivers since there were some changes to the timings a while back.

With the latest drivers all timings should be fully standards compliant and in theory should not cause any issues.

What actually happens with the capture card? Does it say incompatible mode/resolution, HDCP error, nothing at all?

    Steve

  • Hi Edward,

By default HDCP is not supported. Unless customers have specifically bought HDCP enabled parts and have necessary s/w to enable / monitor HDCP, HDCP will not be functional.

I think this may be some other basic issue.

    Can you please check

    • These video cards can receive from any other HDMI source.
    • What kind of HDMI application is present on the camera (based on DM8148/68 devices)
    • Are they able to detect the sink
    • Can they read the sinks EDID
    Thanks,
    Sujith
  • Thanks guys for the many responses.

Yes we have use another video source (media player), and verify that the video capture card (Picolo HD) can display and capture live video.

When feed signal from 8148, it does detect the signal (otherwise it shows not signal), but display only white screen.

We have double check that in our config file, the HDCP feature is not on.

We will try using the latest drivers

    Thanks and regards,

    Edward
