Linux/TMDXEVM8148: TMDXEVM8148 SDK Clarifications and USB WLAN

Part Number: TMDXEVM8148

Tool/software: Linux

Hello people,

We recently purchased the DM8148 EVM board - TMDXEVM8148 for our application development as this board was suiting our requirements. When going through the SDK and I would like to get few points clarified from TI :

1) The SDK provides Linux kernel 2.6.37 which is a very old version. It was surprising that TI hasn't migrated to some of the stable latest kernels. Is there any reason why TI hasn't provided the SDK with latest kernels?

2) Is it possible to migrate to some of the latest stable kernels ? If so any guidance/procedure is available from TI? Can you please support

3)The SDK has Angstrom Linux. We would like to migrate to minimal Ubuntu arm or some other latest distribution. Is this possible ? If so any guidance/procedure is available from TI?

4) We would also like to add a suitable WLAN USB mini adapted for WiFi feature onto this EVM board. Can TI Suggest any suitable/compatible chipset based adapter with procedure to build them. I have gone through the docs and wiki page of ti. They suggest the WL1271 based boards. But this board is not available in the market to purchase. Hence we would like to use the WLAN USB.

Kindly provide suggestions on this.

The reason is that DM814x device is very old, TI Linux team focus on more recent TI devices, like AM335x, AM57x, DRA7x, etc. From the DM81xx family, only DM38x (DM813x) and DM812x has recent kernel 4.4 support. See if below pointers will be in help:

It is possible, but would be not easy. Refer to my pointers above and also the one below:

Only Arago linux (the one that comes with TI SDK) is supported and provided by TI

You might check WL18x chips. You might also check/post in WLAN forum regarding this question.

  • Hi,

Please refer to DM38X/DM8127 CSK software. This release comes with Linux 4.4 series kernel for CSK platforms only. However, with 'little' effort, you can migrate your SDK to this Kernel for your platform.
