Two DM8168 four channel display

One DM8168 can output only two independent channels display, Now I want to increase the  decoding performance and ouput four  independent channels display, so I cascade two DM8168 chips for  four  independent channels display.

There are some problems for me to do it:

1. Could DM8168 chips cascade output four independent channels display?

2. If the DM8168 chips cascade output four independent channels display, How could I connect the two DM8168 chips? Use PCI-E?

3. Does two DM8168 chips need their own independent systems, including the Linux Kernel, application and etc?

  • Hello,

What is the software release that you are using here?

    Best Regards,

    Margarita

  • Is there any solution to the problem?

  • The DM8168 only has 2 HD and 1 SD outputs. If you're going to output more via some interleaving of frames method, you'd need extra off-chip hardware.

  • Thanks for your kindly reply.

Yes, a DM8168 only has 2 HD and 1 SD outputs. But if I cascade two  DM8168, I could get four HD.

I want to know how to  cascade two  DM8168, and how to arrange the software on the two DM8168.

  • I guess you want to use 1 8168 as master, 1 as slave. It is ok.

The connection of DM8168s can be PCI-E.     If the decoding is in 1 8168 only, then the data transferred is very large, on PCI-E meet this.    If each Netra decode 2 chs, then the data transferred is bitstream which costs approx. 40Mbps max.   connecting through ethernet switch chip is possible.

you will need to run linux/app on both DM8168, i think.

  • Yes, Thanks for your valuable reply.

I want to implement  each Netra decoding 2 chs.

If  I use  ethernet switch chip to cascade two DM8168, Could ethernet switch chip fit our meets without any other chips?

If I want to use  PCI-E for each Netra decoding 2 chs, How could I configuare the PCI-E? Could the control signals of  master DM8168 tranfer to slaver DM8168 by PCI-e controller, or other modules?

[Eason]  I have ctm contact 2 DM6467 through eth switch, so i believe it is possible.

[Eason]  Hi,  we have intergrated PCI-E RC/EP drivers in psp.

I havent asked about the video resolution@fps.   If you are talking about 1080@30 or lower , then 1 HDVICP can meet your needs.  DM8168 has 3 HDVICPs. You may consider DM8148.

If you are talking about higher resolution,  then DM8168 is the only option.

  • I have to decode 8MP stream, so I should consider DM8168.

But How could two DM8168 cascade by PCI-e? I have ever read the PCI-E RC/EP drivers in psp roughly. In "TI81XX PSP PCI Express Endpoint Driver User Guide" page 3, Does the PCI-e bridge TI816X RC <-> TI816X EP meet  the fits of two DM8168 cascade?

  • Hi,

Default decoder lib can not get 8M@30fps, just for your infomation.

You can use one Netra as RC, and the other as EP.   You can get more infomation through the RC/EP guide  in your DVRRDK.

    BR,

    Eason

  • Thanks, I will try it.
