New Features Enabled on TMS320C6748 and TMS320C6746 Devices: PRU

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS

Programmable Real-time Unit (PRU) Subsystem support for TMS320CC6748/6 and OMAP-L138 devices available NOW!

What is PRU?

  • A 300MHz programmable real-time interface that allows customers to extend the functionality of their systems by implementing differentiated peripherals/interfaces.

What types of peripherals/interfaces can I implement with PRU?

  • Customers can implement additional UARTs, flexible timers or Smart DMAs based on PRU. Customers can also use the programmability and efficient interface capability of PRU to enable special interfaces like CAN and Profibus for their systems. PRU supports interrupt latencies that are in ns range. This capability of PRU allows implementing systems that require very deterministic, tight real-time behavior, like industrial control.

What support does TI provide to help customers utilize this new feature?

  • TI will now provide customers the necessary documentation to understand the functioning of the PRU and also understand how the PRU Subsystem can be programmed in software. Customers will get access to building block software modules that execute on PRU and demonstrate its key functionalities. Later this year, we have plans to release development hardware that will help customers easily develop functionality using the PRU Subsystem.

Where can I find more information about this great new feature?
