Is there a simple way to get the current link speed?

    Which device/board are you using?

    There is a support for link speed but it is driver dependent and not available with all boards.

    For example: On the OMAPL138 board, after the NDK startup the driver prints the link status to the console:

    Link Status: 100Mb/s Full Duplex on PHY 7
