2 basic questions re CCS 4, 5

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAP-L138

Hi,

1) CCS 5 was released a few months ago, but I've heard things about issues with real-time using the app (some test modes?).  What is about that, and would you suggest using CCS 5 or staying with CCS 4?

2) CCS 4 was included in our dev. kit.  I saw something a few months ago on the TI site that said if you "bought" CCS 4, you could upgrade to CCS 5 at no extra cost.  Is that true, and how would one do that?  Go to TI or LogicPD who sold us the OMAP-L138 EVM?

Thanks,

DM

  • Hi Don,

I hope the following might help.

1 - I would certainly recommend using the latest release.  There have been some major improvements in v5 and we are constantly working to resolve any bugs or items that do come up.  What issue did you hear about specifically?

2 - If you have not already purchases a license, I would simply purchase a v5 license.  A v5 license is also good for v4.  The opposite, as you seem to be aware is not true.  If you purchase or have purchased a v4 license then the upgrade is done through www.ti.com/myregisteredsoftware

So the upgrade would be done through TI.  Note that if you have purchased a v4 license, in order to upgrade to need an active subscription.   When you purchase a license a 1 year subscription is automatically included.

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your reply.  In the past, I downloaded CCS4, and used the "Free Limited" license to make it permanent with no fee.   We'll be using the on-board emulator.

    1) Can't I also do that with CCS5?

    2) Do I just download the version, then apply for the free license?  Maybe I downloaded a version that was automatically "Free Limited".  I can't remember now.  How would you do that?  Sites?

    Thanks,

    DM

  • Hi Don,

the wiki below has some licensing information for you.  Yes CCSv5 does still have the "free limited license" which is free for use with certain evaulation boards and the XDS100 emulator.

Please let me know whether this helps clarify for you.

  • Hi again Don,

sorry I forgot the download site ...  for CCSv5 there is only one version to download for all license types.  For v4 the code size limited microcontroller (MSP and C200 version) was a different download.

  • Hi again Lisa,

Sorry to bug you again about this.

    1) There are 5 versions of CCS5 on the link that you sent.  We're using WincCE 6.0 R3.  Which one is the best version to use?  I know you said that there is only one version for all downloads, but I don't see where it is on the page.

    2) Also, on the SD card that came with the OMAP-L138 Zoom EVM, the DSPBIOS/LINK is version 1.65.00.03.  Will we need to upgrade that or anything else?

    Thanks,

    DM

  • Hi Don,

    I hope the following helps

1 - I do not believe we support Win CE for the IDE.  You may be able to debug and build Win CE OMAP apps using CCS, but CCS itself does not run on Win CE.  There is a windows and a linux version and I would recommend v5.1.1

2 - this is something better left for the OMAP experts and I am sure depends on the software or examples you wish to work with.  I would post this in the OMAP forum.  Maybe even post about about Win CE development there as well if this is your application.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I forgot to mention that our primary PC OS is Win7.  All the WinCE S/W is loaded on that.  CCS would then run on Win7.

    Thanks,

    Don

  • Hi Don,

yes CCSv4 and v5 are supported on Win 7.  In fact I use Win 7 64 with multiple CCS versions daily.

    Cheers,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

So, based on that, let me go back to my last questions:

    1) There are 5 versions of CCS5 on the link that you sent.  We're using WincCE 6.0 R3.  Which one is the best version to use?  I know you said that there is only one version for all downloads, but I don't see where it is on the page.

    2) Also, on the SD card that came with the OMAP-L138 Zoom EVM, the DSPBIOS/LINK is version 1.65.00.03.  Will we need to upgrade that or anything else?

    Thanks,

    Don

  • Hi Don,

as mentioned I would use CCSv5.1.1, the version posted from Feb 16.

As far as your Win CE and SD card questions, I have moved this to the WInCE forum for you.

    Best Regards,

    LIsa

  • Thanks for your help Lisa.
