TPD1E10B09: IEC 61000-4-2 Test Failed at 8KV

Hi,

I'm using the TPD1E10B09 (Single-Channel ESD Protection Device in 0402 Package). The datasheet states IEC 61000-4-2 to +/-20KV Contact Discharge.

In our application I have the TPD1E10B09 directly across a IO terminal and system ground, basically right at the terminal. The device on the other side of the terminal (an TI ADC) was destroyed during the test.

We feel the TPD1E10B09 did not survive and allowed the downstream device to be damaged. The other possibility is that we did not correctly consider the application and maybe the device did its job, but given the time it takes to clamp (i.e 1nS) our device was destroyed.

Can anyone please advise if simply having the TPD1E10B09 is sufficient to meet an 8KV test, or do we need something additional.

    Firstly thanks for the link. It was really informative.

    The downstream device is a TI ADS1292 (ECG) and we are using input IN1P and IN1N.  In series with the input pins we have 51K resistors, and on the ADS1292 side of the series resistors we have 47pF capacitors to ground. On the other side of the resistors we have the TPD1E10B09 and then our connector.

    The TPD1E10B09 has a clamp voltage of 9V and we figured that with the 51K of input resistance, along with the 47pF capacitor that this would be sufficient for protection.  However maybe we need to add some additional zener clamp diodes?

    The TPD1E10B09 doesn't have a clamp voltage of 9V it has a breakdown voltage of 9V. This is when the device starts to conduct current. However the dynamic resistance will determine the clamping voltage during an ESD strike.
    Maybe try the TPD1E10B06 or the ESD401 which will have a lower clamping voltage.
