Can the PCA9518 use two I2C masters?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCA9518, PCA9543A, SN74CBTLV3257

Hallo,

Can the PCA9518 use two I2C masters?
Could you please let me know the recommended application that the PCA9518 use two I2C masters?
I think the PCA9518 cannot use two masters alone.
For example, does it use the PCA9543A for SDA0/SCL0 and the SN74CBTLV3257 for EN1-EN4 between the two masters and the PCA9518?

  • Why do you think it is not possible for the PCA9518 to achieve multiple masters?

The I2C spec supports multiple masters, therefore any I2C "repeater" is also capable of supporting multiple masters.

Both I2C masters could be connected to SCL0/SDA0 simultaneously or, if desired, one master could be connected to SCL0/SDA0 and another master could be connected to one of the other SCLx/SDAx hub connections.

I am not sure why you would need to worry about muxing SDA0/SCL0 or the EN1-4 signals. Maybe you can share your block diagram to explain your meaning.

  • Brian-san,

The following is the rough application image.
I don’t know how each masters should enable or disable I2C bus/EN1-4 during muxing.
Does the master can control enable/disable?
Would you please give me your advice on the solution for the attachment?
