Using the DP83849IFVS-EVK fiber interface

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83849IFVS-EVK

I have purchased two of your DP83849IFVS-EVK/NOPB Ethernet Transceiver evaluation kits. I want to use their fiber optic transceivers so that I can connect the two boards using fiber optic (fly by light), which are each connected by ethernet to two external computers.

The aim is to allow the computers to communicate with each other like they are directly connected by ethernet. Please would you let me know how to configure the boards to do this (jumper pins required in which locations), because I can't get the boards to connect.

Thanks,

Tom

  • Hi Tom,

You will need to have the following configured (see attached).

Also, have you tried accessing MDIO interface to read the register settings? This will help determine the state of your PHY and write to it.

    Cheers,

    Ross

  • Ross,

The customer provided the following feedback, any idea on what could be the issue:

I have set up the jumpers on the two boards as required by the response you attached in your previous email.

I have set them up with one board connected to the Ethernet output on one computer, the boards connected to each other by the fiber connection and the final board connected by Ethernet to another computer.

However, they still don’t connect and the two boards seem to behave differently. I have applied power to both boards at the required 3V3 to the 3V3 J92 pin and GND to the GND J91 pin. One board lights up and draws about 370mA, whilst the other board doesn’t light up and draws only 70mA. If I swap them round, I the same board does the same thing. Why is this?!

    Thanks,

    Tom

  • Tom,

I need more information to help figure out what is happening here.  Could you ask the customer to provide a list of the jumpers that are populated for each EVM?  A photo of the test setup would also be helpful just to make sure I have the correct understanding of the configuration.

    Thanks,

    Patrick
