DP83822I: DP83822I for the BMSR question

Part Number: DP83822I

Hi team,

The customer is using DP83822I in RMII mode with DSP. The network is unable to start.

Then he found the 2 bit and the 5 bit for BMSR are always 0. The attach is his schematic.

Would you provide some suggestions for the customer's issue?

  • Hi Mickey,

Please ask customer to read register 0x00, 0x04, 0x05, 0x10, 0x17, 0x19, 0x467, and 0x468. This will help us verify that the PHY is configured correctly. Customer will have to implement extended register access in order to read some registers.

  • Hi Aniruddha,

I have confirmed with the customer. The read results are as below:

    0x00 : 0011000100000000(0x3100)
    0x04 : 0000000111100001(0x01E1)
    0x05 : 0000000000000000(0x0000)
    0x10: 0100000000000010 (0x4002) or 0000000000000010 (0x0002)
    0x17 : 0000000011100001 (0x00E1)
    0x19: 1000000000100000 (0x8020) or 1000010000100000 (0x8420)
    0x467: 0010000000000001 (0x2001)
    0x468: 0000000000000000(0x0000)

This mean the 0x10 register and the 0x19 register have two different read results.

  • Hello Mickey,

Register 0x05 is the Link Partner Ability register. If that is 0x00 then it mean that link partner auto-negotiation ability are not reaching DP83822. Please check if link partner is operating properly by connecting the Link partner to a known good system like laptop or PC and check if it can establish 100M link.

Please also try to make a loopback cable as described in this E2E post: e2e.ti.com/.../805414

This loopback cable will allow you to check if the PHY can connect with itself. Connect this to the DP83822 system and check if the PHY can show link up. Run the same test on the Link partner and see if the link is up.

    Aniruddha
  • Hi Aniruddha,

I will tell the customer to do the tests. After the tests are completed, I will update the post.
