TRS3221E: Could you tell me about TRS3221E's external circuit capacitance ?

Part Number: TRS3221E

Hi, team.

My customer is now considering TRS3221E/2E.

The following question was received from the customer.

Can you tell me about this question?

<Question>

For both ICs, the recommended value of the capacitor in the 3.3V power supply specification is 0.1uF,

but can it be used with 1.0uF?

<Background of the question>

Currently, the availability of ceramic capacitors is bad,

and my customers are having trouble obtaining capacitors of 0.1uF.

Best regards,

Masumi Sekiguchi

  • Hello Sekigushi-san,

    Yes, the higher capacitance values can be used for C1, C2, C3, and C4. The customer may observe some change in the frequency and amplitude of ripple on the V+/V- rails, but the functionality of the device should not be impaired.

    For a better understanding of the charge pump circuits used in RS-232 transceivers and the effect of different capacitance values, you can reference this blog: e2e.ti.com/.../how-the-rs-232-transceiver-s-regulated-charge-pump-circuitry-works.

    Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,
    Max
