DS280MB810: DS280MB810 equalizer for ARINC 818 transceiver channel

Hi TI team,

I have planned to use DS280MB810 equalizer for my ARINC 818 transceiver lines based application. I am interfacing the copper cable/coaxial cable which is of 20m length with the ARINC 818 transceiver Transmitter and receiver channels.

What and all factor I need to consider? Is that ok to use DS280MB810  for my application?

  • Hi Ananthesh,

    The DS280MB810 is compatible with 8b/10b or 64b/66b encoding and AC coupling.  

    Things to consider:

    1. What is the attenuation of the cable across all frequencies?

    2. The DS280MB810 is designed for differential signals - coaxial cables are single-ended.

    3. The ARINC 818 specification describes a wide range of datarates.  What rates need to be supported?

    With this equalizer DS280MB810, can the differential signals be used as single ended? Can you elaborate regarding this?

    Also I am using the twinax differential coaxial cable with 100 Ohm impedance.

    ARINC 818 interface will operate at line rate of 1.0625 Gbps and 4.25 Gbps.

    Hi Ananthesh,

    With the twin-ax cable the inputs will see a differential signal.

    The line rate is a little low for the DS280MB810 which is optimized for 25Gbps.

    You could also look at the DS100MB203 mux buffer solution.

    Hi Lee,

    Equalizer is required only near Receiver side of the device as per my understanding and transmitter side is not required, even datasheet application diagram highlights the same. My all the tx and rx signals will be routed to the backplane of the VPX connector.

    Do I need to place the 220nF AC coupling on both the sides of the equalizer (Input and output channels of the equalizer)?

    May I know what to be done for the unused REFCLK_OUT and ALL_DONE signals?

    I do not see any issues with the schematic. 

    I would bring out test points for ALL_DONE and REFCLK_OUT.
