[FAQ] LMH0303: How to setup LMH0303EVM to operate in Pin mode or use external SMBus controller?

Part Number: LMH0303
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH0318, SIGCONARCHITECT, LMH0397, , LMH0307, USB2ANY

LMH0303EVM/LMH0307EVM GUI was developed using win XP OS. Majority of PCs now run win10 and it is incompatible with LMH0303EVM GUI. How do we control LMH0303EVM using win7, win10, or other operating systems?

  • The latest 3G cable SDI drivers like LMH0318 and LMH0397 use win10 and SigconArchitect GUI to control the device. On the other hand, the older 3G cable driver - for example LMH0303 or LMH0307 - GUI was developed around win xp. Majority of PCs now run win10 and it is incompatible with LMH0303EVM or LMH0307EVM GUI. Given this, other than finding a win XP pc, there are two ways to control this evaluation board:

1). Pin Mode: In this mode, the user can operate the device as a stand alone cable driver. Please note LMH0303 data sheet for details.
JP1 Jumper on the LMH0303 EVM allow Atmel controller to control different pins on the LMH0303 device.
After we take off these jumpers, we can directly control SD/HDbar and ENABLE pins,
For example, by pulling up or down SD/HDbar - based on incoming data rate - and applying signal on J1&J2 SMA connectors, we should be able to operate the device as a stand alone cable driver.
In this mode, we can leave jumpers for SMBUs interface in - these are pins like SCL and SDA - so these can be used for SMBus control(note below).

2). SMBus Mode: Using a SMUBus controller like USB2ANY or any other controller, we can connect SMBus interface pins - SCL, SDA, and ground - to the SMBus controller. In this mode, we can directly peak and poke into the LMH0303 registers and enable different functionality.
