DP83TC811S-Q1: How to exit sleep mode

Part Number: DP83TC811S-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TC811-Q1, DP83TC811

Hi team,

Can you look into the following questions?

1. When there is "Energy detected on MDI", DP83TC811S-Q1 can exit Sleep mode. Can you explain about the "Energy detected on MDI"? Does it mean that a link partner send any data to the PHY?

2. When communicating between DP83TC811S-Q1 and ethernet switch, is it possible to use wake up function in any directions from sleep mode?

Thanks,

Sam Lee

  • Hi Sam,

    1. To exit Sleep mode using Energy detected on MDI, the link partner needs to send idle signal to the PHY.

    2. Typically, the switch is configured as Master and the client is configured as Slave device. The sleep-wake process would be the switch (Master mode) wakes up first using local WAKE pin, then transmit signal to the client (Slave mode) to wake it up.

  • Hi Hung,

    Thank you for your answer.

    For #2,
If the switch is in sleep mode and the client will send the transmit signal (idle signal?), is the swich also able to wake up?

In addtion, to use WoL function, the PHY should be in normal mode? It's not possible to use it in standby mode, sleep mode of DP83TC811-Q1. Is that right?

    Thanks,
    Sam Lee
  • Hi Sam,

If the client sends idle signals to the switch being in sleep mode, the switch can wake up. Just to be clear, here we're discussing about the DP83TC811 PHY device on the switch side.

To use WoL function, the link has to be up.
