[FAQ] definition of signal conditioner(redriver/repeater/retimer..)

Dear experts,

I want to understand the signal conditioner definition. would you explain what is difference between redriver and repeater and retimer ?

Thanks,

JH.

A repeater can be either a re-driver or a re-timer. Please see this e2e post for the difference between the re-driver and the re-timer.

    https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/analogwire/archive/2017/05/01/how-to-select-a-redriver-or-retimer-for-hdmi-2-0-jitter-cleansing

    • A redriver performs signal conditioning through equalization, providing compensation for input channel loss from deterministic jitter such as inter-symbol interference.
    • A retimer is a mixed-signal device that includes equalization functions plus a clock data recovery (CDR) function to compensate both deterministic and random jitter, and in turn transmit a clean signal downstream.

Re-driver can further be divided into linear and limited re-driver. The difference between linear and limited re-driver is that limited re-driver provides its own TX block which may include swing and pre-emphasis control while linear does not provide TX block, the swing and pre-emphasis comes from the source.

    Thanks
