TPS65987EVM: Application customization tool not working

I have my TPS65987EVM here and am trying to get it to work with the application customization tool.

I am running Win 10 and my laptop only has USBC ports, so I am connecting the micro USB connector U3 via a USBC converter. In device manager I can see USB Serial Converter A, B, C, and D.

When I try the test read on the import configuration from device dialog I get the following exception:

I have tried installing the 3 different FTDI drivers that come with the download pack and I downloaded the software tool today. Version is 5.1.

Do you have any ideas?

Also, I have power going to the board via a wire I soldered onto the back of the DC jack connector. Could you point me in the direction of a recommended plug connector part number? The BOM lists the Foxconn connector but they have no information for a mating plug.

Hello Laurence,

This sounds like an FTDI driver issue, and what you are doing is correct and is what we typically recommend our customers to do whenever they run into similar problems. The only thing that I would recommend is to scour the web for other FTDI drivers, and try those on your system. Each time you would need to remove the previous drivers from your system for the new ones to have any effect. Know that this is less than ideal, and apologize for the inconvenience. FTDI is a third party, and we have seen the rate of issues go up with Windows 10, and so we are currently moving away from FTDI to an internal solution that we can control. Do not have a timeline on when this new EVM would become available.

As far as the DC connector we recommend using any Dell power adapter, but honestly any charger that has the barrel jack adapter would be fine.

Thanks for getting back. I thought that might be the case. I think I will try and connect directly from my MCU to the SPI flash and program it that way. That is how I intend to do it in my final design, so I guess I can get on with it now. It is a little frustrating if I'm being honest. The reason I bought the EVM was so I could use the IC straight away without investing too much time but I spent a fruitless day trying to get things going. I know it's not you guys fault, but having an in house design sounds much better. Serial comms over USB shouldn't be so complicated in 2019. Making the software cross-platform wouldn't be the craziest idea either.
