TPS65983B: Is there user guide specific to TPS65983B Thunderbolt application customization tool?

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D

To the person concerned.

Is there particular user gude for Customization tool? I took several documents for TPS65983B. Some of documents are for  register description and descripton on Firmware User Guide.

While I made its own firmware with tool, I had qustion for a couple of items like below

0) is there any document for customization tool?

1) what is difference between Static and Dynamic Charging?

2) Binary Save file type : regarding Low Region, Tool shows two kind of options : Low Region( for PTCx / PBMx based Patching) AND Low region.

what is major diffence bwt them?

3) what does VIF means?

appreciate your help in advance.

  • Hi Mark,

Have you requested access to the TPS65983B documentation site? This link is available from the TPS65983B product folder.

Because the TPS65983B is constrained to implement only Intel Thunderbolt Reference Designs, the Application Configuration Tool is limited compared to other parts such as the TPS65987D.

You can find some documentation in the Application Configuration Tool install directory in a document called "Application Customization Tool Users Guide.pdf".

    1. Static charging sets a fixed power budget per port

    2. The Low Region (PTCx/ PBMx) is a special binary format used for an EC to load PD Patch Firmware using the named 4CC commands (PTCx series and PBMx series). Other operations will use the regular Low Region format.

    3. VIF stands for Vendor Information File and is used in the USB PD Compliance Test process.

    Regards.

  • HI Mark,

This is a general document and you can find it in: (for example) TPS65983 Application Customization 4_12\tps6598x-application-customization

  • Hi Scott

I read it before posting question. I think it doesn't include explantion for option or menu on latest tool.

Anyhow. Could you give some hint for Dynamic Charging / PTCx series and PBMx series. Even though I took a look at documents for another TI USB-C/PD devcies, I coudn't find relevant artcle?

    thank you

  • Hi Mark,

Which Thunderbolt Reference Design is your system based on?

You will want to check the Host Interface Reference Guide for information on the Source Policy Manager for Dynamic Charging.

Also be sure that your system supports PD Firmware download. Many Thunderbolt designs manage PD Firmware at the system level and in addition the PD firmware does not support direct I2C download.

    Scott

  • Hi Scott

Yes, My customer desiged circuit based on intel.

Technically, Customer just wants to understand what will happen when customer sets up option during FW generationo by GUI tool.

    thank you

  • HI Mark,

Static charging sets the source PDO for each port in the system. The power budget is fixed.

Dynamic charging allows the Source Policy Manager to distribute power between ports.
