TPS65983: TPS65983

Part Number: TPS65983

I have used the TPS65983 as PD controller for Alpine Ridge, i have contacted  the TI FAE ,which can provide the customer rom, but now the windows is close, is there any other workmate can deal with this case?

and for another thread, which feedback the tool link is used for TPS65982, i want to know the bin generated from that tool can fit for TPS65983?

tool information:

slvc621aa    windows_64bit_TPS65981_82_86_87_88_application_customization_5.13

  • Hi,

Please double check the exact part number used? Is it TPS65983 or TPS65983B?

If TPS65983B is used in a Thunderbolt reference design then use the specific TPS65983B Application Configuration GUI Tool -- do not use the TPS65981_82_86_87_88 version.

You can request access to the TPS65983B Secure Software design resource folder by submitting a request from the link in the TPS65983B product folder.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott,

Thanks for your reply. i still used the TPS65983 for alpine-ridge JHL6540 C stepping. during the past design support, there is an FAE of TI who can build a customered Bin based on my design, but this window seems closed. it is not easy to built customer bin from your tool if has no enough knowledge about the PD and your chip.

if i provide the my design information for you , could you provide the bin for my project? or i have to try the tool you mentioned.i want to know could your help provide the specific tool for the TPS65983, not TPS65983B.

for future project, i will update the design using the TPS65983B for easy support.

  • Hi,

I understand you are working on a design with TPS65983 then. Do you know the last version of the configuration tool and firmware (.bin) that you were given?

The TPS65983 is an older device and I need to check the current support options. It has been superseded by the TPS65983A and then the TPS65983B.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott,

I have the original PD firmware backup,

and for the last deisgn, the file was provide by TI FAE, i did not get the configuration tool, so  i can not tell you the tool  version information.

below is firmware inforamtion from the bin file:

     ACE1a, FW0003.61.00 ZAPC1-INTL

this firmware 's configuration is TPS65983+Alpine Ridge B stepping[DSL6540] , now i use the JHL6540 [C stepping].i have get the latest firmware for alpine ridge, but the PD deisgn has changed from 2 port to 1 port, and with the high voltage charger support.

another question, i want to know about the i2c address, the confirguration tool show is 0x38, but the hardware strap is ox70. i have checked the i2c singnal from alpine ridge , the address is 0x70/0x71. so i want to know the i2c address in the configutation tool is for which host to use?

by the way,do you have offical email, i can send my design file and test information.

  • Thank you for the update.

I am checking current support options for this device because  development has stopped on this firmware.

One option is to move to supported PD devices such as TPS65983B or TPS65987D.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott,

if i change the PD to tps65983B, can you mke sure the firmware can support the alpine ridge C stepping? if so, can your help build reference firmware based my design spec?

  • Hi,

Current TPS65983B GUI Tool supports the Apex Creek project variant. You would need to import or transfer any settings from your design to the project. I do not have a way to import device settings between firmware branches.

    Regards.

    Scott

  • Scott,

I have got the firmware build tool, and merger with intel firmware, but the host can only detect usb3.0 device, not thundebolt .any suggestion to check the TPS65983B?

my design information: please  refer to the schematic.

  • Hi,

Have you checked using a PD message analyzer? Many TBT mode entry issues can be seen by decoding PD messages. Attach traces and we can check for issues.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott,

     thanks for your reply.

i have no the device now, have you received the schematic? could you help review the schematic?

i have done some check, the CC signal is normal after power on, but when connected to the host by TBT avtive able, there is no responce in CC signal line. it seems something wrong in hardware .

    any suggestion?

  • Hi,

I cannot review the schematic because it should match the TBT Reference design.

Have you double checked the signals on all CC / Vbus to verify a Type-C connection? If this shows a valid connection, do you see any PD communication on CC?

If no, then check that PD Controller has booted correctly and loaded firmware.

    Regards,
    Scott

  • Scott,

    Any update?

i have got the reference firmware for both TBT controller and Pd chip from previous design, it works now. but i want to konw, if i use the tool your provide to update the pd firmware to fit my design, it seems not work. for example, i disabled the PP_5V PDO from the reference, it leads to the TBT controller being not work correctly? do you have any suggestion?

  • Hi,

I would like to help with the issue you describe but I do need more details.

Firmware for the TPS65983B device will not load and run on the older TPS65983.

Because there is no longer support for the TPS65983 device my first advice is to migrate to the TPS65983B or other TI PD Controller such as the TPS65987DDJ.

    Regards.

    Scott
