TPS65987DDJ: TPS65987DDJ error recovery time

Part Number: TPS65987DDJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D

Hi team,

My customer is desiging our TPS65987DDJ in their monitor application and they are testing for type C Vbus short circuit.

The short circuit timing is 1 ~ 3 seconds. However, in our Global System Config, the max "Error Recovery Time" is 1 seconds.

In this case, when the short circuit is longer than 1 seconds, the PD will not be able to automatically recover from the fault, and need to perform cable unplug-replug.

Is there any other way to recover the fault?

could we issue reset command from EC or scalar? what will be a good delay time if do so?

Any different in term of behaviour if we use internal power path, vs external MosFET path?

Regards,

SK Loo

  • Hi SK,

The PD controller will automatically retry to make a connection after the Error Recovery has completed. There should be no external control needed to retry the connection.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

when we perform the short circuit test with short circuit duration < 1 sec, it will automatically recover when the short circuit condition being removed

However, when we perform the short circuit test with shorted condition of 3 seconds, after the short circuit condition being removed, it did not recover. Need to un-plug and re-plug the cable to recover.

So, when the PD re-try to make a connection after the Error Recovery time has completed (which is set to 1 seconds in our condition), but the fault is still there, it didn't recover.

    THanks,

    SK

  • Hi SK,

I could not reproduce this issue on the TPS65987DDJEVM. Could you try to reproduce this issue on the EVM and let me know the results?

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Thanks Eric,

In customer case, they are using external power path for 20V, and internal power path for 5V, 9V ad 15V.

During 20V Vbus short circuit, they are using external EC to detect the short circuit, and shutdown the external FET via EC for 100msec.

In this case, the PD will shutdown due to UVP (?)

Any different in behaviour on the recovery due to OCP and UVP?

    SK Loo

  • Hi SK,

I would check to ensure the customer is re-enabling the external power path after the OCP event occurs. The TPS65987D will not prevent a re-negotiation after an OCP event.

    Thank you,
    Eric
