HD3SS3220: DFP doesn't power up.

I have inherited a design from another engineer who has now left the company.

It is a single board with 2x USB-C UFP and 2x USB-C DFP

Basically, one of the UFPs passes through to one of the DFPs but goes via a Pair of HD3SS3220 muxes in order to allow for any cable orientation at each port. (so 4 possible cable orientations).

(Each UFP and DFP port also has TPD8S300 for port protection)


Each DFP also has a TPS26600 (eFuse) to switch the DFP power on, and portect against power surge, but only when required. Ie the power won't be switched through from UFP to DFP until a device is detected on the DFP.

However the issue I am seeing is that the DFP power never gets switched on. As I understood it, the CC lines on the DFP should be such that it switches the ID line of the HD3SS3220 (mux) which I then use to drive the enable signal of the TPS26600 (eFuse) however this is not happening.

I can supply full schematics and board layout files in PDF or Altium format, but the UFP->DFP is just one part of a much more complex board.

Can anyone explain why the ID line of the HD3SS3220 is not being assetred (low) when a device is connected to the DFP?

    I also have issues about cable orientation on both CH1 and CH2 but I will deal with those separately.

    well normally FAE will send issue to us for help too.

    For DFP, you need bus switch to control Vbus, Pls check figure 11 at datasheet.

    I am using a switch to control VBus - could you possibly expand on your comment?

    My problem is that the Mux doens't seem to control the switch when a device is plugged into the DFP (DFP1).

    I would expect the mux to assert the ID line when it detects a device attached to the DFP, by measuring the CC1 and CC2 lines.

    ok, I didn't see CC communication between UFP and DFP. ID goes to low when DFP sees an attachment though CC communication.

    Also DIR should pullup to 3.3v and ID need big resistor like 200k pullup to 5v.

    CC from the DFP port are connected to the MUX chip

    DIR is pulled up on the mux, (Page: DIHC_E001-USB-Type-C-MUX-DFP1.SchDoc)

    and ID has a pullup too. (PAge: DIHC_E001-USB-Type-C-DFP1.SchDoc, Signal name: USB_VBUS_EN)

    This is getting quite urgent, is there a way to contact a TI FAE and/or get paid support on this?

    So you have CC connection between UPF-Mux to DFP-Mux?

    I don't know who is FAE in Scotland, but you can setup  a webex  or a call with us.
