Laser driver with an evm availability

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ONET4201LD, ONET1101L, ONET1151L

Hi,

I am currently in need of a laser driver to power a laser diode.  This is for an optical time of flight system where the laser beam is traveling through the air.  This is only needed for output to the laser.  The laser diode itself needs little input to power it (3V input, current rating of 40 mA), so practically any driver should work.  I just need a driver that comes with an affordable evaluation module for testing purposes.  Is there anything in your catalogue that fits this criteria?

Thanks,

Nathanael

  • Hello Nathanael.

Our laser drivers are designed for optical communications systems. Pulsed laser operation for time of flight systems typically requires a different type of driver. The laser anode is usually tied to VCC and the cathode is DC coupled to the driver. A DC bias current is then applied for a short pulse period. Our drivers have a DC bias current and a high speed modulation current and usually require AC coupling. Most TOF systems need hundreds of mA of bias current but if you only need 40mA of bias current then the ONET4201LD, ONET1101L or ONET1151L may work if you only use the DC bias current output and toggle the transmitter disable pin. If you need to apply a constant DC bias current for the off level and a higher bias current for the on level then the ONET4201LD may work since it can be DC coupled to the laser but you should keep the voltage on the MOD+ or MOD- pin above 1V. My recommendation would be to try the ONET4201LD but we do not have an evaluation board for the part.

    Regards,

    Alex.
