Trying to connect TUSB7340EVM to fiber optical module?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB7340

Dear Experts,

My assigned account is currently trying out our TUSB7340EVM. They tried connecting the USB3.0 superspeed ports to module by converting to fiber but they couldn't do it, the PC did not see it. The fiber module can work between 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps. Is there anything they need to know and take care of in order to convert the superspeed ports to fiber?

Thanks,

Murat Ilhan.

  • Hello Murat,

The TUSB7340 is not a fiber communications product and we have no information on the optical module and the type of signal it requires. It could be that the output of the TUSB7340 EVM is not compatible to drive the optical module. I am not familiar with the USB standard but there could be some handshaking required and this is why the EVM cannot drive the module.

    Regards,

    Alex.

  • Hi Alex,
Here is some information I got from my customer with some questions I asked, I hope this helps:

    "What is the optical transceiver?

We used GLENAIR Fiber Optic Modules. You can find details of transceiver as shown below.

    www.glenair.com/.../050_315.pdf

We used 050-315-2-D whose range is between 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps.

What do you mean by "does not work" ? / Is the EVM working with other devices?

We have required development boards for converting Usb3 copper signals to fiber optics.

First we tried our development board without fiber optics as shown below.

It passed, i reached CYUSB3KIT, and run applications.

    For your information:

USB PLUG DEV Board: sincsquared.com/.../ss-usb3-sma-data-sheet ( Part No: SS-USB3-SMA-P-M)
USB RECEPTACLE DEV Board: sincsquared.com/.../ss-usb3-sma-data-sheet ( Part No: SS-USB3-SMA-R-M)
    USB3 SLAVE BOARD: www.cypress.com/.../cyusb3kit-003-ez-usb-fx3-superspeed-explorer-kit

After that i insert fiber optics

We bought Glenair fiber optics with development boards which have sma interfaces.

    www.glenair.com/.../050_329.pdf

Windows can’t find USB3 board. I removed TUSB7340EVM and Cypress Board, then i connected a pattern generator and checked. They are OK.

Fiber Optic Transceivers are working fine with FPGA transceivers. Do i need additional hardware for connecting TUSB7340EVM to Fiber Optic Transceivers?

    I only doesn’t connect USB2 signals (Data+ and Data-).

We may use TUSB7340 inside a computer, but we need to convert one of superspeed port to fibers."

Let me know if you need any other information. I do not know if all this will change your answer but have a look at it anyway please. I will also send two functional schematics to your email.

    Thanks,
    Murat.
  • Murat,

An optical transceiver is what he is already using from Glenair.

I spoke with someone that is familiar with USB and he thinks that what I suggested previously is correct. The link is obviously working from the USB plug to the USB receptacle with the fiber in place but the hand-shaking between the TUSB7340 and CYUSB3KIT is not occurring correctly when the fiber-optic transceivers are placed in the path. There is a low speed signal from the TUSB7340 to the CYUSB and from the CYUSB to the TUSB7340 that must be transferred and this is probably not occurring. Or, it could be that the TUSB7340 is not seeing the proper termination when the fiber link is inserted. The TUSB7340 needs to see a properly terminated load before it start to transmit the signal.

I do not support the USB devices so if you need more support then I suggest that you move this to the USB support forum.

    Regards,
    Alex.
