Can I use the DS90UR905Q/906Q pair to transmit random 18-bit binary data?
I need dc-balanced solution to ser/des random binary data of 18 bits at 62.5MHz clock. Can I use the DS90UR905Q/906Q serdes pair with HS=VS=DE=0 and six unused data lines also grounded?
It wasn't clear from the spec sheet if transitions are required for any reasons on these pins. The spec sheet mentions the chipset is useful for displays up to 1024x768, but I am hoping this is just a max data rate issue rather than some unmentioned transition requirement on HS, VS, and DE.
Yes, you can transmit ANY 18 bits across the link, the video control signals are not required. The 18 bits are encoded by the chipset and are randomized, scrambled and balanced and of course decoded at the other end. The DS90UR905Q and DS90UR906Q are qualified for automotive applications.
If that is not required, a non-AECQ part with similar performance are also offered - see the Channel Link II family: DS92LV2421 and DS92LV2422. Once again, you can drive all zeros, or any code and the video control signals (HS, VS, DE) may be tied off.
The parts can also accept 1.8V LVCMOS or 3.3V LVCMOS, other versions are available with LVDS interfaces as well on the slow side of the devices. Consult the datasheet for features and information on how fast - how far.
