Isolated CAN transceiver Vs Non isolated CAN transceiver

Hello All,

I have two queries on CAN interface:

1.  What are the advantages of Isolated CAN transceiver over Non isolated CAN transceiver?? 

2. Which of the system requirements calls for Isolated CAN transceiver usage in circuits??

    Isolation is typically used for two reasons with CAN.

    1. If the system you are using the CAN transceiver in has a possibility of large ground potential differences between different nodes on a network, isolation is a possible solution. Every transceiver is going to have a limit on the maximum common mode voltage that the receiver and driver can handle and if your system can exceed that limit, then isolating the nodes on the network from the control side will allow all the transceivers to "float" to the same potential thus eliminating the issue.
    2. If the system you are working with has large voltages that could be harmful to other circuitry and/or potential users, then isolation can be used for safety. A lot of medical equipment has a requirement for isolation for this reason.
