Level Translator - PECL Differential -> LVCMOS

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65LVDS348, SN65LVDS352, SN65LVDS33

My avionics customer is looking for a solution for translating from PECL Differential Standard to LVCMOS. At first glance through our parametric search I wasn't able to find anything. Just want to make sure we don't have a part for this already, or if there is one on the roadmap. Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael Arriete

  • Hi Michael,

This is not in my particular product group (I support high-speed datapath ICs like repeaters/retimers/mux-buffers in SVA), but I did find some PECL PHYs that may be useful for you.

PECL is similar to LVPECL, but it is the 5-V version compared to the 3.3-V version that we are more familiar with. Therefore, it is more typical to see PECL converted to TTL/CMOS rather than LVTTL/LVCMOS to keep the power supply consistent.

Try taking a look at the SN65LVDS352. SN65LVDS33, and SN65LVDS348 (difference is operating speed), which all have a wide common-mode range. All three of these parts can take in PECL and will output LVTTL. While LVTTL is not exactly the same as LVCMOS and has a slightly lower output high voltage min and slightly higher output low voltage max, many devices that are designed to accept LVCMOS signals can interface without issue with LVTTL incoming signals. All you will need to do is check that the customer is okay with the output voltage specifications for VOH and VOL in the datasheet.

    Regards,

    Michael
