PCA9306

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCA9306

Hi,

My customer want to use this device.

Their requirements are MDIO interface and 3 MHz operation frequency.

3.3V(Host) and 2.5V(device)

Is it an appropriate part for my customer?

Thank you

  • Hello Jim,

Generally speaking, to support a digital interface, you want to have a -3 db bandwidth of at least 3x the fundamental frequency. In this case, since MDIO clocks at the rate of the clock, the fundamental frequency will be 3 MHz for your case. So you would want a device which has a -3 dB point of ~9 MHz at least.

While we do not explicitly call it out in the electrical characteristics, you can see there is a typical characteristic curve that shows bandwidth of the switch going well into the 500-600 MHz range.

Basically, you should be OK using the PCA9306 as a translator for the MDIO interface at 3 MHz of frequency.
