AM26LS31 - shorted output pins

Hi,

We have a quad differential driver in which the output +/- may have shorted together (output pins 17 & 18).

The datasheed lists max short-circuit output current at 150mA.

Is it possible to damage other output drivers when this short occured?

Is it possible to have a latent failure which could have damaged the power rail for the chip?

Hello Andrea,

If two outputs tie together you create a resistive short from supply to ground. Dependent on your supply voltage and load resistance, you can blow the part. WHat is the value of each?

Andrea,

The short will be current limited and will decrease with increased temperature. RS422 drivers run warm even when not shorted due to high output current for 4 termination resistors. Excessive heat is bad for all integrated circuits. Lifespan will be decreased for a continuous short.
