How to measure cable impedance using the TLK110 TDR function

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK110

Dear Sir \Madam

I am developing a new product using the TLK110 (currently selected)

One required important task is to measure the CAT-5 impedance (required by my client) and to diagnose connection.

The main microcontroller(CM4) will talk to the PHY using MDIO interface.

I have searched this forum , but find no concrete answer , there was several question regarding "cable diagnostic" but only one provided with some preliminary App note from 2011 who is not showing how to preform impedance measurement using the TDR function in the TLK110 as described in the Data sheet

Thank you

  • Yuval,

Could you help me better understand your requirement?  The TDR and ALCD functionality of the TLK110 can estimate cable length, cable faults, and signal quality, but does not make a direct measurement of cable impedance.  How would this measurement be used in your client's system?

  • Dear Patrick

Thank you for the elaboration on the TLK110 features.

I was miss interpret the Data Sheet ,I thought the TLK110  can  provide accurate cable  measurement for very short cable.

Anyhow your answer clarify the question's ,I have regarding the TLK110

    Thank you

    Yuval
